1999 Camry Rainbow Germanium/JL 12W6 Thread! (Picture heavy! 56k beware.)

Ehhh..kinda. The word 'empeg' in the title is totally misleading, that's a totally different brand and type of device.

You'd have to have a PDA or a PC to control it...it says there's an 'optional addon IR receiver' that can use certain remotes, but you won't be able to search for a specific track or artist etc. without the pda interface (which i assume you can do through the pda interface..). Also, the empeg can play FLAC, OGG, and any kind of MP3 you can possibly throw at it because it's all being decoded by an open source linux kernel...you will find that most of those 'keg' designed have an onboard chip for decoding mp3's that chokes hard on VBR files and resultingly they have zero support for any other audio formats. Plus the empeg can house 2 laptop harddrives of any capacity...200gb of music entirely possible, today. I would pay 100$ for a keg setup like that IF i already had a PDA *AND* i could look at the software and make sure i had all the same functionality as the empeg. You can modify playlists on the fly from the custom empeg remote, search by artist, genre, year, title, album, etc. with the remote and enqueue, replace, etc. to your current playlist... that device appears to only have "Play modes include all songs in album or directory, all songs on disk and random modes." which is nonsense...you'd be constantly selecting new songs. With the empeg riocar, I can make a playlist on the fly in the car, OR predefine one on my PC and just let it play through that in sequence, or in shuffle mode. I can tweak the list by expunging all tracks from the same artist, album, source, or year...i can shuffle the playlist, then re-sort it so that all tracks from the current tracks artist, album, year, source, or genre, are rearranged to be played next...but keep the rest of the list shuffled. After a few of that type of track i could change my mind and with one button expunge those types of tracks from the list...etc.

Tis badass.

Can't beat the feeling of coming home to find some new equipment. It's like Christmas, and the UPS guy is Santa Claus. ABSOLUTELY nothing better than being able to mount your mids nice and flush like that aganst your door panels...Woody. How much are theose Germaniums running now? Anywhere around $300?

Absolutely //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I love seeing new things on my doorstep when i get home. It'll be nicer when i've got them mounted with some non hardening clay and have the doors all deadened up //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif The midbass these produce is impressive considering the install is in a TOTALLY stock door. The Germaniums are running 450$/set last i heard.

man youve got me really wanting a set of these now. i was going to settle for the slc265s, then i decided f it, ill get the id chameleons, but the whole time wanting the germs. now ive almost decided i want the germs. just got to justify spending about 550 for the speaks and door pods for the tahoe. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

i just dropped 550 on tires though so....but the new tires did make a huge diff in the handling/driveability so maybe i can convince myself by comparing the benefits of some nice comps //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif

I would invest in an isolator. You're batteries are constantly drawing against eachother, even while you sleep. I have a SP1000 Stinger under my hood, and a SP1000 in the back for my suspension/audio, and I run a Stinger 200 amp isolator to keep things steady, and I've not had ANY problems in 2 years of use, while friends doing similar setups without an isolator have problems about 4 months into useage.

Other than that. BADASS write up. I am sold on them. I'll be looking into them in the near future.

I've never had a problem with my 2 battery setup draining eachother without reason; the only times my battery has died was because i accidentally left my stereo on //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif An isolator would have saved me a fuse in the second case but thats about all. Batteries with similar resting voltages (12.6v in this case) don't constantly discharge eachother any more than they would normally self discharge - this does mean that one bad battery can pull the other good battery down, however...but in that case you've got a problem anyway //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Another germanium owner on the way...i feel so proud. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif Can't wait to get my freakin replacement woofer back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Only having right channel sound is killing me!

Hey all. I'm posting this thread up to show the install and note my impressions as i make changes to my new system... figure someone will find this stuff interesting //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Plz be gentle. I'm a newb. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Nice write-up. Nothing newb about ya. You talked over my head a few times about xing over those Germs but I haven't had a chance to tinker yet. Done lots of research and am starting to collect everything for current install. Going dual battery with 1/0 Awg run from front. Waiting on my Germ's right now. Bi-Amping and running one RE SE 12". Very similar set-up to yours. Deadening with Dynamat Xtreme from the get. Hope my set-up gives me a similar reactions. First box arrived today.

Awesome man, that's one tasty lookin set of box contents //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I think you will love the Germaniums //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif IMO, try listening for a day without the 6x9 rears and then hook them up after some listening time on the germ's alone. You'll probably find the rears rather underwhelming at that point, unless you have good time alignment set up.

Yarr! Upgrades continue. Just dropped in an Arc 4150XXK to power my Germaniums. Wow, she sure is huge compared to the 3422. Had to orient it sideways as it didn't fit vertically...and move my distro blocks around. This replaced my Eclipse EA3422 which was supposed to be 4x50, 2x140w. Well, the Arc obviously destroys the ea3422 handily. The official specs are 4x80@4ohm, 160x4 @ 2ohm...but the birthsheet i have shows 180-183*4 @ 2ohms. Bridged it's speced @ 320x2 @4ohm, which is how i've got it hooked up currently. WOW, tons of midbass. The set gets insanely loud with this kind of power on tap, without any sounds of strain from the drivers. Midbass is much more pronounced and it blends absolutely seemlessly with the sub now. Yay for more amplification //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif Had to run extra power to the rear, so now i have 2x4ga for power and 1x4ga ground and 1x0ga ground...ran out of 4ga so i ran 0ga for the 4150 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I'm still not touching what this 4150 can do; max input current is around 40-45amps and it can pull up to 95 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif. I think 2x200w is just about right for the germs.
