1999 Camry Rainbow Germanium/JL 12W6 Thread! (Picture heavy! 56k beware.)

oh yea, the W6v2's are a drastic improvement from the original. Wish you could hear mine:)
Only thing i'm wondering is if the v2 will get going on the same amount of power as the v1. I could run the w6v2 @ 2ohms on my punch 100 and get ~350w from it, but i get the feeling most people push more like 500-800w.

Well ****. Driving home tonight listening at a reasonably high volume, there was a crackle and my right Germ woofer died. Same shit that happened to the left woofer a while back //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Still have tweets on both sides and the left woofer sounds fine. No bad smell from the speaker that i could detect and the amp was cold, i had only been listening perhaps 2 minutes when it died. Now i'm ****ing pissed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif Got my gains set at under 11 o clock on the 4150xxk. Going to pull out the woofer tommorrow (it's ****ing cold tonight //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif ) and see if i can tell what is wrong with it. ****.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif My left woofer died in July of 06 after~5 months of use @ 2x120w or less, this one died just at the 1 year mark after i upgraded last month to a 4150XXK - I think literally within 30 days of the one year mark from when i bought it. Funny the guy above me would mention 1000$ components... i feel like replacing the bad woofer and selling this set off so i can put the $$ towards a set of powerline CS's that are rated @ 250w. I love how the germaniums sound, but it appears that i am demanding too much from a set of woofers rated @ 150w. I love loud music and it's bitten me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Rick -- i'm uploading the song now. It's a great track for midbass sweeps and hard hitting distinct lows blending nicely with snappy in your face highs...i use this track to demo my system quite often because there's such a large amount of the synth sweeps generated up front, it's one of those tracks that really makes the bass sound like it's all coming from the front.

what were the settings on the xovers, and what did you have them high passed at? And I assume no BB or loudness was on either. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif This sucks...1st I ve heard of a germ mid blowing.

edit: not my taste in songs...but I may have to give it a listen on the germs. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

x-overs are set to 2.6khz x-over points for both the woofers and the tweeters. No bass boost or loudness turned on, though i did have a slight (2 clicks out of about 12 on my cd7000) PEQ boost @ 125hz and 160hz. I had the entire set high passed at 12db/80hz. I thought the first was a fluke occurence, but seeing a second woofer die -- on a totally different amp! makes me very nervous about putting replacement(s) in...wtf would cause them to die like this...gains on my 4150 at under 11o clock, deck volume @ 60 out of 80 at the time of the problem occuring

im assuming this was a cd and not a song played through an ipod right? Hmm...your settings seem similar to mine but i kept my mids at 2200 and put the tweets at 2600. so obviously its a thermal problem with the germs and not mechanical because HPF at 80 is perfect. I feel like the aluminum cone should help with the cooling...your ARC amp is solid. You got em from Don right? Give him a call.

Not from an Ipod - from the empeg unit that is shown in my first posts in this thread. The empeg is a high quality mp3 deck (20 band parametric EQ, tone adjustment, on the fly volume normalization, even supports a radio tuner) with 4v preouts that are run into my AUX-IN on my CD7000. I've got my cd7000 aux input sensitivity set to LOW as recommended in my Eclipse manual for units pushing a preamped signal into the aux input..judging from the volume difference between a CD (which reaches LOUD at 55 on my HU) vs. my mp3 player (LOUD is about 62) i think it should be safe as far as clipping on the CD7000's input stage.

Yeah, i got 'em from Don. I'm going to give him a call after i get the woofer yanked out of the car and see what's wrong with it. I think it's either a thermal issue or a mechanical failure of the speaker itself. I never heard back what was wrong with my first dead woofer...wonder what it was.

lemme know how this goes...Don will take care of ya. When you take ther speaker out, take pics and push on the cone to see if it "froze up".
