Guy at car sudio place said some weird things...

I went down to one of the car audio places around where I live, and this is a pretty good place overall. They carry pretty good brands like Alpine, Kicker, JL Audio, Eclipse, and the people there seem to be pretty helpful.

But today one of them said a few things I'd never heard before.

The first was that Kenwood HU's have the highest repair rates of any other company. He said they break VERY frequently, and even suggested brands they don't carry that don't break as often. So now I'm back to square one as far as what HU I want to buy.

And then when I told him I was going to get a pair of subs from RE, and he was like "They pound, but the SQ is shit."

And I was thinking //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

I mean, I'm sure he wasn't referring to ALL of their brands because I'm sure he hasn't heard a XXX or even an SX, but to say that a product from RE has shitty SQ blew me away...

And then he suggested I go with a pair of Kicker Comps. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Anyway, should I never talk to this guy again or what?

Yes, you should continue talking to him. It's hard to find people that hilarious. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. About kenwood decks... I have seen many more people kenwood fok up than any other brand so... i dunno bout that one. Oh yea, like he said, my xxx does have some shitty sq. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

It’s all about the commission, very seldom about the product. But I have read some post here about Kenwoods. Picking a H/U is hard; you want to find the right balance between price and performance. Keep looking and good luck!

Yea, this guy is a moron. Kenwood Hu's are fine, and the sq on the RE Is alright. It doesn't ****. Then , he reccomends kicker comps? THOSE BLOW ***. This guy is an idiot, go to another store.

uhh... kicker comps dont blow ***... good one though, you must also work at a shop right? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

Yeah that's like the guy at circuit city trying to sell me a SOLO X 18 for daily driving... in a sealed box... like a small sealed box. Then when i told him what i had he was like well you could get 2 solo X 18"s... Yeah GL fitting that in anything other than a Semi.

Another good example of moron car shop employees is at this shop right up the street from me. My friend took his sub up there to see if he could get a custom box built for it ( i tagged along to make sure he got ported as that is what the sub was designed for ). The guy was like yeah we can make a box for it... so i started asking questions like. How big are you going to make the box... What are you tuning it to? What thickness of wood do you use? He answered in the following order.

We use 1/2" MDF in all our boxes... that should be plenty enough for that subs. ( this is a 15" sub that was goint to have 3kw going to it )

I'd give that box about 2 or 3 cubes... that should be plenty.

Tuned? what do you mean tuned you cant tune boxes.

After that i asked was he putting it in a sealed box??? he answered

Oh yeah, ported boxes sound like crap horrible SQ and they don't get loud...

I just told my friend, lets go and i left laughing.

So since everyone on here seems to have such hatred toward car audio shops does everybody install everything themselves. I wanted to install my stuff myself but I think all the electrical and setting all the extra stuff will be confussing, but these horror stories make me stay away from car shops. Chief

YUP, I installed all my suff. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Yep I install all my stuff, Only one of my systems was installed by a shop and ill never do it again... not because of the quality of the work but because when i wanted to add something i didn't know where they ran the wires through and i didn't know where all the relays and circuit breakers were. You really need to know where those things are when a gallon of water leaks into your trunk onto your amps and you need to shut everything down.

kenwoods do often need repair, most especially the flip ones. the problem with the flip ones is the wire tape (totally forget its actual term, but it looks like a slimmer smaller IDE cable) that connects the flip screen to the rest of the unit often breaks or comes loose.

LOL. Yea, these stories always have cracked me up... even when I was designing/installing for 2.5 audio shops in town, about 15+ years ago. The kind of crap people pull out of their hiney (even my old BOSSES), without ever having first-hand knowledge of the equipment they're talking about, makes me chuckle. I mean, where does it come from, I ask myself... maybe they heard some valid information somewhere along the way? Naaaah!

B'sides, a good design and execution of the installation can usually make even crap equipment sound notably better than good equipment tossed in with very little planning, testing, and attention to detail.

I remember being told that an Infinity Reference 12" sub was the hardest hitting one at CC and the salesman said he had one himself. I asked about the MTX 12" they had which is in the same league almost and the guy goes "Yea man this hits hard too!" Then he showed me some Dual™ dual bandpass sub enclosure. I sad, "Why don't these subs shake the room" and he goes "Because I can only turn on one at a time" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I told him I had a 15 inch sub and he goes "You can only buy 12" it's the law, we can't sell 15's here //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif " and then told me sinche he hadn't heard about AA that they must be crap and I should return my sub because it probably has no warranty and will break, but that Sony Xplod's won't break beecause of the plastic surround //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/furious.gif.fc81ca146dbff91fede3ed290dbc4f4c.gif

That's about the time when I left.
