yout HT sub......

Servo controlled subwoofer make a huge difference in the accuracy of sub bass output, its easily noticeable in movies.

I went to a little seminar they had at a local Hi-Fi store. They had a rep from Velodyne demonstrate the difference between a non servo controlled woofer, and there Digital Drive series. One of the movies demo'd was Jurassic Park, the scene where the T-Rex first appeared, when you hear and FEEL its every step. With the non servo sub, the bass rumbled along long after the T-Rex took its step, while with the Digital Drive, each step had a nice "thump" and that was it, until the next step. Its hard to explain, but it was noticeable.

**** I want that Velodyne DD.

if ANYTHING, and ESPECIALLY JURASSIC PARK, the servo subwoofer should be crying compared to the normal one. he's a velodyne rep, what do you expect? i wouldn't take a servo vs a regular for the world when it comes to HT. there is no comparison and even the guy who owns one (adam71) recognizes this too. however, they COULD be considered cleaner for music i guess or smaller setups, but when it comes to outright shaking your children bass, a servo comes in second.

well, u should tell adam to get his asscheeks in here and tell us his opinion on his plate amp. sounds very intersting

well, it sounded great compared to the non-servo sub, thats all that matters to me. If I can buy a Paradigm Servo 15 for $1500 that wont distort at its maximum output of 120db, I am happy (then again, I would be happy to first have a place where I can play a sub that loud).

Velodyne F-1000 from 1992. 80 watt amp and servo controlled. Very very sweet sounding woofer for music. It doesn't have the THUNDER needed for a HIGH impact home theater woofer but it does the job for the most part. 13 years later and I'm still very happy with it.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

um, show me stats that this woofer puts out 120 dbs?

I'm NOT so sure I would say it comes in second. I think its a matter of taste for the most part. When I said it didn't have the THUNDER is was talking about rumbling of big movie soundtracks. I relocated my servo sub into the corner of my basement after doing a remodeling and now the sub is much more efficient and it hits incredibly hard now. Its amazing how moving a sub can make such a huge difference. Does it have THUNDER now? Not as much as I'd like but its alot closer to what I want now. But that is due to its 10" woofer and little 80 watt amp, NOT because its a servo controlled sub. Servo-controlled subs come in alot of different sizes and power ranges now. I would take a servo sub over a conventional sub just for the accuracy alone, even if that meant it wasn't going to be as loud. When it comes down to it, how loud does a HT sub really have to be. If you have an accurate servo sub that is plenty loud, why would you want anything different.?? I listen to alot of music on my system and I couldn't imagine having a loud and muddy inacurate non-servo controlled sub trying to keep with fast transients that are present in modern jazz.

Just my input. In short, I think it depends on what you're looking for a sub to do. If "loud" is all you need then NO reason to get a servo sub. If you're looking for accuracy as well then servo is the way to go.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i am speaking from a graphical standpoint. sure, you might not need more, but you don't need more than a 15" xxx in ur car, but some people have six //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif I have heard many velodynes and they make your ears bleed with the clarity, but when put up against a fine regular sub, they don't stand up (HT). my opinion though, taste determines everything.

and to piggyback off of you, i read many reviews where subs had 150 - 300 watts from a regular plate amp and they got good reviews ( there were alotta sealed subs too)

I'm running both:

Polk RM 7000 series dual 10" side-firing 365W for the upper-end of sub bass, and a DIY 3 Cu. Ft. sealed enclosure with MB Quart Premium 15" DVC car audio driver for the uber-lows, on a 250Watt PartsExpress plate amp.

I could probably get away with eliminating the Polk powered sub altogether, but it's so accurate in the range it can handle. The Quart 15 picks up the uber-low end and subsonic that the Polk can't. Works well, and I have a pretty large HT room to fill.

edit: Oh, and I'd rate it 7.5 of 10 since there's clear room for so called "improvement". I've seen HT sub setups that are mind boggling (entire basements used as enclosures with 16+ gigantic subs horn ported into the listening area, for example). But the sound balance for my system and money/space/time invested, puts this performance easily on the upper-end of the chart for me. If the rating was limited to something acheivable by most people, I'd give it a clean 9 of 10.

Unfortunately, my HT sub is in my car //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Both the Shiva's or Uber could work, though.

My towers are good enough for me right now. When I do step it up, it'll likey be with the uber, some gigantic enclosure, and 2400 watts.
