ok i think i have a problem i currently have 2 bats. and a 140amp alternator. ive done part of the big 3 (alternator to bat positive). and im getting a reading of 17.4 - 17.8 volts is that kinda of voltage too much?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

sounds to me like you need a new voltage regulator, depening on the year of your car youre running a major risk of buring everything up in your car esp the carputer which operates the motor and transmission BETTA GET IT FIXED lol

WAY too much.

Either your batts are wired in series insead of parrallel or your alternator is having issues.

Take the extra batt out and see if the voltage goes down. If it doesnt then your alt is having issues.

It has nothing to do with the added batteries or wiring adding extra voltage(although if you installed something incorrectly it could have led to this), your regulator is fried or set imporperly if its external. Did you just buy the new alt and is it internally or externally regulated?

i bought it recently it was fine before i did the big 3 i think. it must be externally regulated because wouldnt it by-pass the regulator if i put put 4 guage from (alt positive to bat postive)???

If you did not specifically order an externally regulated alternator, then it probably is regulated from the inside.

And I am unsure what you mean by bypassing the regulator, there is no way to do this. If you added a run of 4 guage from batt to alternator then you are just upgrading the wire size from the factory 8 guage or whatever they used, nothing is being changed, just upgraded. Is this wire fused that you added?

heres the alt that i bought abought 3 months ago http://4wd.com/newsite/shop/productdetail.asp?pid=47294&model=yj&cat=10&kid=57&catid=57&mid=n

and what i mean by by-passing the regulator was that if the regualtor was indeed external. wouldnt i be passing the regulator by adding some 4guage from alt postive to bat postive. because when i follow the orginal alt postive wire it goes into this box like thing then back to the battery. and no the 4 gauge wire i added was not fused.

The regulator would be ON the alternator, not in some other location under the hood; so no you are not bypassing anything.

And since it is an unfused wire, be sure it isnt touching anything hot or near any moving parts, and check to see if it is bare in any places possibly grounding it out.

How do you have your second battery wired?
