re sub heating up??

just try like i said, sub level @ 15,bass on 0,turn down the gain, turn up hu to a max point ,no more than 3/4's,or where ever you listen to it as long as its not max and start turning up the gain on a heavy bass song till you hear distortion or it stops getting louder, back off a lil
while im annoying you with questions, my sub hits what would be the low notes, but dies on the "filler higher notes" that i noticed other subs hit. Is there a frequency setting on the amp set to low? like i said tomorrow ill post the settings. Thanks for your hellp guys i know this is alot of questions.

dont know bout jl amps, sorry bro,i'll allso have to look up on ur hu,i've only owned a 9825 which was a low end model of alpine and i could change the frequency on that one as well as my higher end model 9835

i just looked at your model.the manual should tell you how to adjust the lpf,i think it has a x-over as well right ? the x-over will have more effect than the equalizer if ur front stage is stock

im assuming ur talking about the amp. as far as an x-over i have no idea what all that is.

ok but the sub isnt loud by any means in the first place. will turning the gain down even further reduce that? btw the guy said he had it 3 quarters if the way up i believe. i figured with the amp bein underrated this couldnt be an issue. shows how much i know.
i dont know if this was answered. i only read half the posts.

you say he had the gains 3/4 the way up. that could be fine, it could be horrible. if your HU puts out lower voltage (ex. 1.5v) then you might be fine. however if the HU puts out higher voltage (ex. 4-6v) then you can be horribly clipping that amp. the goal is to match the gain with the output voltage of the HU. it is NOT a volume knob.

my friend's HU puts out 6v, his amps gains go DOWN to 4v. this means his amp will clip with the gains all the way down if he turned the HU up.

feel free to pm me if you need help.

man to be honest i dont know how this sub isnt busted then. i noticed it will start out loud and then get quieter. something is wrong and im hoping there is no perminant damage

ok, i have an alpine 9885. if im setting the hpf thats not affecting the sub is it? i know i have that at 120hz. as far as the amp settings i have no idea what the people did. i didnt really question them due to my lack of knowledge with all the technical settings on an amp.
ill try to be a little more detailed. so an alpine head unit has volume #0-30 (i believe). the sub preamp is #0-15. when my volume is at say 5, sub preamp on 5, its decently loud. if i wanted more vocals and turned volume to 15, sub preamp at 5, its as loud as the sub will get. even if i crank the sub preamp alll the way to 15.

btw my bass setting is at the max, which is 7. I hope all this makes a little bit of sense?

Based on the bold text above, I would hazard to guess you are expecting too much from what it is you have. Take a step back, determine what it is you really want from your system and then plan the purchase of equipment to satisfy you.

define "very hot".... it should heat up a little that's normal...

is there any smell coming from the voice coil or do you just notice the dust cap getting hot?

and i'm in alpharetta, like 15 minutes from woodstock...

ok i took it back up to brandsmart. the guy there said the other guys did it wrong. im not sure what the problem was. they all seem like idiots if you ask me. now i have my bass at 0, my sub output to 15 (max) and i have to turn my head unit up wayyy loud to get the sub movin much at all. i understand u can only get so much with my set up but something isnt right.
