Purchased Car with System and Amp kicks off with low Bass...

Straight Destruction!!!
Hey guys!

New to the forum and was wondering if you could help me out.

I bought a car recently from some kid and when he was showing me the Stereo system, it ROCKED! Really deep loud Bass and plenty of it.

The kid was MAD sketchy tho and when I went to go pick it up he said he "Tuned" it for me so I don't blow the subwoofers.

Ever since, the amp for the 2 12" woofers will kick off after a few seconds if I increase the bass level to about 1/3 of the way. In order to get them to turn back on I have to turn the stereo (on the deck) waaaay down and then back up. When It comes back up the bass is there like nothing ever happened.

I lowered the back seats so I could check the temperature of the amps when they kick off and they were cold, so there has to be something else going on.

I just got a new battery and have installed a grounding kit with no change.

PLEASE HALP!!!!!

Thanks guys!

I look forward to meeting all of you.

Maybe the kid didn't know what he was doing and maybe he turned the gain up? Might be going into clipping thus sending the amp into protection. I would turn it on and go back and see if the protection light comes on. If so, then need to turn the gains back on the amp. I suggest looking into a DMM or have someone that knows what they are doing in the tunning area.

Or it could be something with the subs. What kinda subs are they?

sounds like theres a short in the speaker connections or the wires themselves. ive had this happen, and my amp would cut off and turn back on when i was re-adjusting the gain with my dmm. and that was well below the 44.7 volts i needed, i checked on my box where i connect to my bolts for the connection to the sub, and sure enough one of the terminals got loose and swung over and the negative touched the positive wire.

Kickers. What would an audio shop charge for checking it out and finding the issue?

impedance maybe
How do I check that?

check the load
is that the load the subs are putting on the amps??

thx~!

check the amp model number do some research on the amp to see if it is 1 ohm stable or 2. next check the subs to see the impedance of each woofer(dual 2 ohm .dual 4ohm, single 4 ohm) after that look at the way its wired(bridged or not) their you will find the problem. check the gains and all the flters to see if he is clipping it. also he probly swapped out the amp to something smaller so he could kep the other amp then forcing the lil smaller amp he replaced to under impedance(load)

Im going to take what you said, figure it all out and post my results.

I think I'm going to need my dictionary lol.

Also, your subs could be blown/blowing. When subs start to go out hey can loose their connection internally with the voice coil so when at low volumes they still can act normal but any real movement and they can separate from eachother...causing a drop in impedance thus causing the amp to shut off.
