New sub cuts out intermittently

Hi all, this first post on these forums and I am hoping to get some advice on this problem I am having.

I will first start off by sharing the fact that I know next to nothing about car audio, so I did not personally install this system, I had a local shop do it for me almost exactly 2 weeks ago.

I have a Phoenix Gold R500.1 Amp installed with a Phoenix Gold R3 12 inch sub.

I just finished checking my power and ground connections and they seem pretty solid.

As the title says, my sub woofer is cutting out.It cuts out for maybe 30 seconds to a few minutes.

This just started today on my commute home from work. I stopped by the shop where I had the system installed and the shop owner sat in the car with me and had me set the sub level control and stereo volume at what I normally listen to music with. I generally set the sub to about 60% and volume to 45. He told me I should turn the volume to no more than 37 and that should fix the problem. This just occurred today, so I haven't really tested his theory out, but he also told me that if I got a better head unit (mine is just a stock stereo) this would fix my problem and I could crank the volume up higher.

Is this guy just trying to get me to spend more money?

Could this just be some kind of overheating issue? It was 96° today, and I have about an hour commute.

Any help trying to solve this problem is greatly appreciated.

Did you check to see if the protect light is coming on? You maybe running the amp into distortion and clipping or overheating.
No I did not. I will be doing some testing tomorrow and will make sure to check that

i think more testing will yield a different prognosis .where in cal are you ?
I am in sac.

Other than blasting the thing and checking for the protect light as suggested above, what other kinds of test can be done?

check continuity of the ground wire, check voltage at the amp ,check for loose wires and connections ,bypass the deck with a direct lead from a ipod to the amp .too bad your not closer ,i'd take a look at it . what shop installed it ?

mike's sound solutions in EG

wire size ? and what kind ? who makes it ?
I don't know the size, or how to figure out what size they are, but my speaker, power, and ground wires are all "raptor" brand.

I am getting a multimeter to do the tests you suggested tomorrow.

Also, how do I "bypass the deck with a direct lead from a ipod to the amp"?

aux to rca plug .need to know the power and ground wire size , should say on the wire .i'll look into the raptor wire

Doesn't say on the wire, but based on what I am seeing on Raptor's website, they most likely are 8 gauge. My amp is only 500W and raptor's 600W kit is 8 gauge. This is only a guess though, like I said the measurment is not on he wire's themselves, they all just say "Raptor™ Premium".

Im guessing since it a basic shop install it 8 gauge wiring. Im like 99.99% sure the deck has nothing to do with it lol.. My guess would be the gain is not set right and the amp is temporarily going into protect mode.
