local car shop guy told me i should sell/get rid of my XXX 18?

Lol.. Just buy an Aero for 30, 32 and 34Hz. Keep it 9 cubes. That way, if you feel a certain song doesn't knock down houses as quick as you'd like at 34Hz, drop in the 32Hz or 30Hz aero. Unless you have different boxes or interchangable ports, There will ALWAYS be certain songs you like that won't 'rumble' enough.

EDIT: 9-cubes sealed is a bit.. Well.. Too fuggin' big

-Bill-

ok. if i go ported, i'll do 9 cubes @ 30hz.
now, lets compare..

what would be the output & sound difference between:

9 cubes @ 30hz&

9 cubes sealed
theoretically 3db increase going from sealed to ported. a noticeable gain.

sealed will be flatter, ported peakier. my tastes have always been ported, dont know about you.

agreed.

although i know lilmaniac has a ported box that stays within .5db for almost all of its bandwidth. eh, just gotta experiement

You can't expect to stop hearts and shatter bones at EVERY frequency. Personally, 9-cubes @ 32-33Hz should be plenty to make people plug their ears in traffic. Just don't expect every tone, in the songs you like, to respond the same.

-Bill-

yeah i understand that.

thats why i want to build the front stage up..

so 30hz @ 9 cubes should be nice?

i understand i wont destroy every song unless i would get interchangable ports to go from 30, 32, 34 etc..

i just want to experience the flexibility and power of this sub.. ported @ 30 or 32hz is what most people are saying..

now, what would you guys recommend to build up the front stage?

lets not be so quick to call "Tim" a dumb *** here guys..........we have not got the whole story frome the begining.

to make a acurate decision on what he needs we need to know every thing he has!?!?

as far as we know "tim" did know what all was going into the car...fist off what kind of car it was going into, what he is using for front stage, what he was powering the sub & front stage with......none of these things were stated in the first post and everybody was soooo quick to call "Tim" a dumb ***:wow:.

i think some of the lines "Tim" might have been thinking was in order for the front stage to keep up with the volume on a 18" sub of any brand or style the sub would need to be severley under driven to blend the music properly. correct?

so in order to blend front stage with bass output, 2 15's or 3 12's would be more appropriate when the sub is driven to its max potential.

i am not trying to dis anyone of you or your knowledge of car audio because i dont know any of you personaly, i am only going from my own 16 years of professional car audio experience.

then you get good comp's and what not for the front stage, and put an amp on them.

not always that easy......you need to try to match the comps to the frequency extension of the sub. but with a 18" sub you will still need to underpower it to match the db output of your front stage or you will be over powered by bass and not enough mids& highs.

sub is 2,000W rms, on a 1,500w amp (us amps ax-1500de)

im pretty sure i can keep the gain low and put an amp on the mids and highs...

now that is all good and dandy put my point here is now you are underdriving your sub........it will not perform to your expectations being underpowered.

that is why "tim" recomended multipule smaller woofers as apposed to a single larger one.

just keep in mind, Gain is not a volume knob

There are a number of reasons tim could've suggested another sub.... Not worked with 18's to much, or the 18's he has worked with left a bad impression and since he hasn't heard the 3X he could very well just be giving advice on what he heard previous... IMO that's a pretty honest guy playing it safe imo.... But the point is getting advice from people who HAVE worked with the sub is a better way then just listening to tim cause you will lose out on a great sub...

9 ft^3 at 30hz would be amazing....

I'd definitely do it (coming from someone who's worked with this sub)
