local car shop guy told me i should sell/get rid of my XXX 18?

Way to miss my point entirely. Im surprised a 'professional' is still not getting it even after having it explained to him. Where did you say you worked again?
Anyway, I was comparing equal output levels. Smaller subs at max excursion, single larger sub at half its excursion, both displaying the same output level. The larger sub would produce less distortion. No snide come backs will change that, sorry.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif Im comparing excursion limits, obviously. Trying to sidetrack the conversation with talk about vented applications dampening excursion limits will not change the facts. Nice try.

BTW that sounds like a one-liner a salesman at BestBuy would use when attempting to sell crap subs. I hope you dont use it at your 'job'... unless you work at BB... then nevermind.

Yet another example of missing my point, entirely. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wow.gif.23d729408e9177caa2a0ed6a2ba6588e.gif

Again, I was comparing sub systems given the same output level. Let me quote exactly what I said...

Notice the 'to reach the output level of a...' part of that quote? Do you suppose... that means playing at the same output level? Nah, surely your reading skills wouldn't have missed that. Unless you were too busy working out the perfect sarcastic reply to notice, that I actually made a point. I do find it ironic however, that you chose your sarcasm to be one of questioning my reading skills, when clearly yours were lacking when you read my reply. Either that, or it went right over your head. Your choice bud.

So now your story is the problem is withh frequency response. I see. So I guess that talk about 'underpowering' the speaker really wasn't related to your actual point? Or are you suggesting frequency response changes according to input power levels? Lets look again at what you said...

So again, if your arguement now is about the 18" sub having a hard time blending with weak *** mids by needings to play midbass, a frequency response issue, I fail to see why you used a term like "severley under driven" and "would be more appropriate when the sub is driven to its max potential"...? What does 'max potential' have to do with frequency response? How about 'severly underdriven'? Id continue this, and bury you further, but Im confident your following explanations will do that for me. And, Im really curious to see what you come up with. I need another good laugh like your last reply gave me.

Cheers.

so with all your attacks at me and child like behavior, what are you 12? you sir dont get the point //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

is it not possible to have 2 reasons why one would do a certain thing over another?

freq has nothing to do with max excursion (wich by the way is what you started runnin you trap about not me) but the 2 points to my ramblings that were miss by you and waisted on you, cause that must not be possible to do in your little world.

this forum is obviously SPL driven and not SQ, with that being said now i understand your reason of thinking.

so we will just agree to disagree on this subject because you and i both have taken this other persons thread WAY off topic.

I don't feel like modeling the new XXX, but I'd go sealed shoot for a q of .5 or so. Model it in winisd, whatever box size gets you that would be my goal for really low sq oriented bass. You'll need a very solid set of midbasses that can play fairly low to really keep your F/R even though, it'll drop off pretty fast probably in that alignment, however, again, I might be wrong. I have no idea what the inductance of the new XXX's are....
An alignment that low is not possible for this sub; it's Qts is .55.

where do you work twistedfreak, i also install here in wichita and am curious.

perhaps you'd like to hear my sloppy and inaccurate xxx 18 sometime //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif

Yes, I am. And isn't that sad, you just got owned intellectually, in public, by a 12 year old. *laff*
freq has nothing to do with max excursion (wich by the way is what you started runnin you trap about not me) but the 2 points to my ramblings that were miss by you and waisted on you, cause that must not be possible to do in your little world.
Its funny, you like attempting to correct me ("oh and max potential is a big diff. from max excursion too"... "freq has nothing to do with max excursion"), and yet its obvious you have no clue what you are talking about. You spew vague generalizations that 1) aren't always true, or 2) make little to no sense what so ever.
When you tried to claim professional status, I decided it was worth my time. But now, seeing your inability to discuss higher level topics without them wooshing right over your head, I see Ive been wasting my time (as opposed to waisting it lawl). I always love people who are too dumb or inexperienced to keep up with a conversation, but then still run along nipping at the heels of the people who ARE keeping up.

this forum is obviously SPL driven and not SQ, with that being said now i understand your reason of thinking.
Im talking about distortion output levels, and what will distort less with a given output level... and you boil that down to I obviously only know about SPL? Could you be any more dense if you beat yourself in the head with a mallet? I dont think I even need to point how/where you are being such a moron in this situation.
Ive never built an SPL rig in my life Sherlock. And Im quite confident 1) I have more expereince than your lying 'professional' *** does, 2) that the current system Im building is far and away a better SQ/SQL system than anything you've ever done, and 3) that your mom is disappointed in how you turned out. Make your mom proud, get into a profession that better suits you, like litter removal.

so we will just agree to disagree on this subject because you and i both have taken this other persons thread WAY off topic.
Yes, that's the typical response of someone losing a debate and not wanting to man up to it. Agree to disagree. I guess its just too hard for you to admit you were wrong, being obtuse about it, and came out of this whole thing looking really stupid...? Yeah, no big surprise there.
Im still curious where you work. Im not at all impressed with your 16 years of professional knowledge. Id like to know where all this wonderful training has come from. News flash, you've been wasting the past 16 years of your life. The world needs garbage men too... think about it.

I got on your case because I do not like people who claim false facts, then back it up not with proof, but with a resume. Your resume sucks, it proves nothing, and your 'facts' are even more shady. Again, the only professional installer you'd possibly make it as, would be the guy at BestBuy that sweeps the floor in the install bays. You dont have a freakin clue about car audio. I believe you are a 'pro' of 16 years about as much as Id trust my dog to do an install.

Have a wonderful day. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

twistedfreak and Nutz should get a long very, very well.

and twistedfreak, pwned. thats all i have to say.

immacomputer is going to help me out with my build as far as giving me an idea of what i could do as far as an enclosure...gotta take some measurements first.
