Alcohol is used for medicinal purposes.
Lets step back from the "it must be regulated due to medicine" argument. Its a plant. Its a plant that you set on fire and inhale the smoke from (usually). Its not made, its grown. Its not eaten, its fuel in a combustion process.
And, if it were legalized, and you are prescribed to use it, you could go down to the local store and buy Budweiser brand or whatever well trusted brand name you prefer, in sealed packages just like aspirin or food. Or if the FDA wants to regulate prescribed versions of it, instead of buying it at the normal tobacco/alcohol/marijuana store, you could go get your prescription filled at the pharmacy, getting highly-regulated versions of the same product that ensure its really marijuana. If its used in food, it should be regulated for purity just like any other ingredient.
The rest of the population will just stop buy the local store and buy Budweiser brand pot on their way home from work, to smoke while watching the nightly news. No worse than buying a 12-pk on your way home from work.
