Gain Setting Tutorial

1)I have two Coustic CF1244 dual coils rated at 400W RMS. That's per speaker, or per voice coil?
400W rms total to each speaker, ie. each coil is 200w rms.

2)Using a Kicker ZR600 which is rated at 150x2 (4 ohm stereo), 300x2 (2 ohm stereo), 600x1 (2.66/3 ohm mono). Now, if I hook up those two CF1244s, which ohm load would it present to the amp?
The resistance presented by each speaker depends on the resistance of each coil and how you wire the coils (parallel or series) ie. if they are 4 ohm coils each sub can be wired to 2 ohms (parallel) or 8 ohms (series).

3)Should I hook each one on a separate channel or both on bridged. I'm just trying to figure out which would be the optimal wiring, so I can adjust the gain.
To make full use of your amp's power you would want to wire them so that the amp is powering the lowest stable resistance it can.

Thanks a lot. They are dual 4 ohm. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

SO IF you are setting your gains it shouldnt really matter if it is 2 ohm or 4 ohms your gonna get the same voltage at each. correct. like my MTX 942

175*2@4ohm

350*2@2ohm

sprt(175*4)=700, sprt of 700=26.45V

sqrt(350*2)=700, sqrt of 700=26.45V

and you can get all HZ(freq) of test tones on ROE website as well as white noise and pink noise.

One more thing on my 2 MTX amps they say that they have a compression circut "This way, when you turn the volume up very, very high, the amp won't go into clipping during dynamic musical passages (this saves the life of your speakers).

" is this true or just BS

I'm going to be running a soundstream 1500d. I'm running two 12'' Tarantula T-5's @ 2ohms off it. @2ohms the amp puts out 1100W. how do i figure out how many volts i should run for my gain setting. and were do i test it with the DMM?

With my front speakers I'm running a TRA680.4 which is 85W X 4.

46.9 volts

you put the dmm leads on the speaker terminals and turn the gain up till you get that voltage and you'll be set.

The formula you need is in the first post of this thread. It's the square root of desired wattage times the impedance of the speakers. So in the last example if the two subs together present a 2 ohm load and you want 1100w into them then:

sqrt(1100w x 2ohms) = ? volts

sqrt(2200) = 49.9 volts

I have a zx1500.1 running at 2Ohms. When I put the dmm leads in the speaker terminals (with the meter at Vac 200) I dont get a reading, its just stays at 0. I dont know if this matters, but im running a pioneer head unit. Thanks

This is happening to me too. It's ticking me off knowing that I can't set it right. I also have a pioneer head unit. My sub amp is a Cadence zrs-8.
