What is wrong with Employees?

Only if you have agreed to work on commission and he has not paid you your extra dues.
If you have a fixed salary or wage that you agree to, then you need to bust your butt to complete everything that falls under your job duties/responsibilities, which should have been listed when you applied for the job.

And as Aaron (spelling?) pointed out, certain things are strictly forbidden in the Terms of Employment (ie. browsing the internet) and are inexcusable.
Indeed, amen, right on...

And yes it is Aaron... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/woot.gif.aaa6090e619a97b6090d16dd863c5a69.gif

my last job was to answer calls and we had a computer in front of us to basicly check through and look up answers for people's calls. Good thing about my job were the hours that I work; 11pm - 7am... so not many calls would come in, what else was I supposed to do to make this company money? I couldn't force people to call me with questions, so I surfed the web until people called...
Unfortunatly, I was laid off along with 30 other employees for "a lack of productivity', so I guess I should have invented work or a way to save my company money. But either way, some people's works offer nothing better to do than surf the web.

Sounds like there wasn't enough work for you to do. So, you should have been laid off...

Sorry about your luck I guess...

It seems that many of them come to work to screw off and not to actually work.
We recently had to let some go because they were browsing the web, downloading music, and chatting online instead of working. They also managed to infest the company computer with spyware.

I know a lot of people post here when they are supposed to be doing work. Why do you do that? Do you view work as time you can screw around?

Why is it that some people try everything they can to not do work when they are at work?

Employers don't pay you to surf the web, post what you think about someone's subwoofer, or check your facebook/myspace page. Employers pay you to do work and make them money, so that they can pay you money.

This shit pisses me off...

oh crap, this thread makes me feel bad, let me get back to work!

Usually most agreements include a "Other duties as required."
If not, you can put up a fight if pushed...but it's probably not your time unless there have been repeated offences.
Is it up to the employee to request those tasks or the employer to assign them?

I cannot move up/promoted/etc until someone above me quits.I cannot get a raise until next January...whatever Congress deems.

If there where these alternative incentives like crosstraining....I would gladly take part in, as it simultaneously benefits the company and myself. But such actions are frowned upon in my workplace. Crosstraining = knowledge = empowerment = fear.
Sounds like you have a shitty job...

Crazy if you think about how much tax dollars are being waisted on people surfing the internet... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

Employer to assign them. However, this can include an all encompassing "look for work when you're done" encouragement or instruction from the employer at an earlier date.

I think many employees get the shit end of the stick and that some employers think they should do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want. But if you agree to work for me, there are two options:

1. You work hard under the terms we agree to. These are modifiable by either party with mutual consent only.

2. You go apply for a different job.

Take a look at diyma...

I get paid the least of the bunch at > $21/hr.

Here's something to think about.

If they tried really hard, an office of 6 can be accomplish by 3. However, that would reduce seperation of duties. In one fell swoop, 2 of those 3 could conspire to defraud the govt out of 3 - 4x my pay without anyone knowing. By making 6 people have to work together, it reduces the odds of fraud, which saves tax dollars.

Benefits from a government job are usually pretty excellent. Also many large corporations are structured the same way.

Think how much govt money is wasted in general. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I find no difference in an employee pretending to dust a sign for an hour and an employee surfing the net.

I remember when I was a supervisor at Lowe's and we were overstaffed, I'd have them dust the concrete ailse.

That sounds like it is a bit far fetched and an excuse to burn 4 months of my work pay that I give for the government.

3-4 Months of your work goes into that waist too...

Many of the employees here came from private industry and agree that it is structured in a similar way. I think the reason why joetama has such an issue is that a) he is directly affected by the actions and b) he can see it.

If he was CEO of a fortune 500 company 1000 miles away from accounting/finance/whatever...I doubt he'd worry about it as much.

You are old enough to vote.

However my position is assigned by Congress.

I'd rather you use that vote to give me a reason to be more productive. They tell us one day we will be on a paid for performance type pay schedule....and if the money is there, my time on ca.com will be decreased.

I find no difference in an employee pretending to dust a sing, surfing the net, or taking my wallet.

Sweeping the concrete aisles is still something productive for the company.

Oh I know. I wasnt saying it was right at all. I agree with you on many issues as I have also had to deal with them. Soon I got tired of the BS and left.
