What is wrong with Employees?

It sounds like there is never an assigned list of tasks to be completed an assigned period of time...people struggle without regimented schedules.
And some people are just pieces of shit.
If by pieces of shit, you mean employees that understand there will be no additional financial compensation for additional productivity, and claim that compensation as they see fit (ie surfing the internet)...then yes, I am a piece of shit.

No. By pieces of shit I mean people that show up every day thinking they can just **** around like it's high school and get paid till the "bell rings."

Lots of pieces of shit like that around here.

Even if there is an endless list of tasks it is very hard to enforce this in a retail environment, especially if the possession is purely commission based. At least in my experience. That is why I got out of retail management.

I guess I am just off base with the way people think. To be honest, if I am paying you to do a job and you play on the internet you are no better than a thief or a scammer. You are stealing money from me that I am paying you to do a job.
But if I am more productive that what you are paying me for...should I adjust my output to my marginal product of labor? If I am producing more, then it is you are the one that is stealing from me.

I would say out of the 20 people we have 16 or 17 achieve and complete what they are supposed to. They have a good time at work and love working for us. Out of those 20, one has been with us 10 years, one 8 years, two 6 years.

I am not saying people should be chained to their desks and be forced to do something constantly. But, what I am saying is that people who break company rules just bother me. I guess it is more the pieces of shit who bother me then.

Only if you have agreed to work on commission and he has not paid you your extra dues.

If you have a fixed salary or wage that you agree to, then you need to bust your butt to complete everything that falls under your job duties/responsibilities, which should have been listed when you applied for the job.

And as Aaron (spelling?) pointed out, certain things are strictly forbidden in the Terms of Employment (ie. browsing the internet) and are inexcusable.

What businesses do not understand is that I do not see myself as simply a cog in a machine. I am always first and formost in the business of me. ALWAYS. I am not a god damn charity donating my time and effort for nothing.

Sounds like you need to work on the endurance a little there...

My grandfather is 85 years old, my father 48, I'm 22 and I don't get 'wore out' when I work and neither do they.

9AM to 5PM isn't that long of a day. Especially if you are part time like a lot of our employees...
Its not the work that wears me out, but the downtime...I go home more tired when I have sat for 8 hrs on a day that no1 comes in, or no deals to work than if I was to put in a full 10 hour labor job....

If you are more productive than you should be able to get more work done.

If you have 5 things to do. And you do all 5 in 3 hours then surf the net 2 hours you are no more productive than the guy who does 5 in 5 hours.

What you should do is finish the 5 things, ask for what you can do for the next 2, especially if you have this happen regularly. If you work in a good company then this would and usually does get noticed and is a great way to get bonuses and move up in the company.

What happens when one completes these assigned job duties and responsibilites?

my last job was to answer calls and we had a computer in front of us to basicly check through and look up answers for people's calls. Good thing about my job were the hours that I work; 11pm - 7am... so not many calls would come in, what else was I supposed to do to make this company money? I couldn't force people to call me with questions, so I surfed the web until people called...

Unfortunatly, I was laid off along with 30 other employees for "a lack of productivity', so I guess I should have invented work or a way to save my company money. But either way, some people's works offer nothing better to do than surf the web.

Ah... I got ya... It is better to say active than sit and do nothing...

Usually most agreements include a "Other duties as required."

If not, you can put up a fight if pushed...but it's probably not your time unless there have been repeated offences.

I cannot move up/promoted/etc until someone above me quits.

I cannot get a raise until next January...whatever Congress deems.

If there where these alternative incentives like crosstraining....I would gladly take part in, as it simultaneously benefits the company and myself. But such actions are frowned upon in my workplace. Crosstraining = knowledge = empowerment = fear.
