What is wrong with Employees?

Indeed, I can defiantly see that being an acceptable reason. But, would you surf if you had stuff to do?
No I wouldn't and don't surf if I have tasks that need completion or if employees under me are dropping the ball, I pick up the slack. However right now in our business the workload is extremely light. So light that I have to contemplate sending the labor home to reduce costs. I hate doing this, but it is coming up I fear. You can tell when I have substantial amount of work to do. My posts will be non-existent until I go home and wind down at home for a bit.
I won't deny there are those that do skirt work though, but implying that all the posters claiming to be at work are skirting is a bad generalization.

There are a lot of points of view on this. Just like anything else its all perspective. I have been on most sides of the fence in this discussion and can see valid points of view from everyone.

The problem is, is that problems change with the perspective of the viewer. Its been a good thread though.

I USED to surf the net at work (I work in a pharmacy) we have our slow season (summer) and our busy season (winter). 2 of our pharmacists switched positions (pharmacy manager asked to step down and be just a pharmacist).

The new manager:

1. Drives 40 miles to work

2. Gets to work 30 minutes early

3. NEVER sits down the whole day

4. Is always cleaning, straightening stuff up etc etc

5. Gives all of us (pharmacy techs, cashiers) a list of "chores" to do that must be initialed done before we are allowed to leave.

The old manager (still on staff, just not the manager anymore)

1. was less organized

2. One of those "as long as it gets done" kind of guys

3. He would go the extra mile for patients

4. Shows up 5 minutes early (when you first get there, theres usually 10-20 rx's to fill that patients called in over the night)

The first one may seem like a better employee but she constantly runs off patients, many of our patients that have been filling there since the store opened left solely because of her. None of the techs/cashiers like her and frankly, I used to love my job. Now I hate waking up.

Which employee would you rather hire?

Does this manager have a blossoming meth habit ? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

That is the whole issue here. You can't compare certain industries to others, heck you can't even compare some job junctions in the same industry to others.
That also means that just because you have experience in one small facet of employee management it doesn't give you the perspective to judge all employees and their situations in all industries. There are far too many factors facing companies today to say company policy will always reward employee contribution.
