One 15 in the proper box will have better output than two 12s in an improper one. 1 x15 would be killer dude. An x12 would be impressive properly set up as well.

It has for a long time. I haven't used it since ANT bought it and made it pay-per-view but it's still the best show in town for picking up cheap goodies.

Out of a trunk I think you're pretty limited on getting much louder without dropping a lot of money, but the fist thing I'd do is build some different boxes for testing. SA is a solid platform if you don't plan to do big electrical upgrades and DB Drive makes fairly decent amps.
