Will i be happy with an 8" sub?

I know this is entirely subjective, but I do not know what to expect with an 8" sub. I have an old 10" MTX Thunder 6000 sub, but it has a large hatchback style box. If I keep it I'll end up building a new, smaller box so I'm going to build a box either way. A local guy is selling an Image Dynamics ID8V.3 D4. I listen to a wide range of music, and love some bass in my hip hop/rap. Is a single 8" going to satisfy my bass itch? Fyi, I've just had a factory system so any bass is better than what I have now.

It really depends upon the person. There's another person on here running a single 8 but in a tline, as I will be doing the same next year.

A high powered 8 coupled with a big power amp should get decently loud.

Cool. Our first kid is due in a few weeks so I will need room for stroller and misc baby gear, that's why I want to go small. I do like that I can get away with half the amp power with a 4ohm 8" compared to the 10" I have. I think it may be the way to go. I think if I give it enough juice it will be comparable to the MTX as I think it's a better sub to begin with.

I had the idv3 8 not really impressive. There are a lot more powerful 8's out there that work well in ported boxes. Look into something more powerful in a dual 2 that can be wired to 1ohm. When buying an amp power at 1ohm will be a lot cheaper than power at 4ohm. Look at sundown, dc, massive hippo 8's, older tc or soundsplinter something with a solid 2-2.5" coil with lots of xmax and 300+wrms the idv3-8 has a large plastic motor cover making it look beefier than it is.

I will be sending 800 watts to my DC Audio m38 8" sub....prob more than enough power but will certainly get loud.

Sundown Audio x-8 can handle 750 watts. If you found a SQ 1200.1 amp to that sub, that'd be a perfect match, just keep gain low.....nothing beats solid clean power to a single driver. And enclosure is just as important as install.

While a tline sounds cool, it's probably above my ability to build a proper one. A ported box is probably as adventurous as I'll go. I guess I'll look for a more capable sub. I read favorable reviews of the Tang Band W8-740P, but it seemed most of the praise was from several years ago. Are they still a good but in an 8" sub or would sundown be the better option? I'm hoping to keep it around $100 for an 8" sub.

The ID8 isnt meant to get loud. That being said I ran 2 of them in a 1.4 cube box ported at 32Hz on about 700wrms for the pair and they were nice little subs that got low and did it clean.

Yeah, I knew they were more sq subs than spl. I guess for my application I would want more "volume" than the ID's provide.
