Telling if a sub is blown by touching? RE

Hey- I sold my 15" RE HC recently. The buyer just recieved it today. I got the sub brand new and used it for about 3 months with only 1000 watts and for daily driving, not even burped once. The sub was in perfect condition when I took it out to ship it. I packed it very well in a box with lots of peanuts, and big bubble wrap all over the sub. Also, it was packed with a piece of wood under the magnet so it wouldnt fall through. It was secured so the sub would not move aroud inside the box. Then, that box was put inside another box for safety. I also insured the package. When he got the sub today he emailed me and says that "when he pushes the cone, the sub feels blown." Now he did not explain this very well, but for him to be able to know that is was blown by pushing it lightly, wouldnt the suspension have to be completely frozen, with the sub not moving at all? And then he could determine it is blown? Unless something happened during shipping, there is no way that it is blown. I know the suspension is tight because I barely pushed the sub when I had it. Please help me out. Thanks

IMO the only way to tell by pushing it was if it was completely frozen or if he heard a noise when he pushed it (misaligned coil, etc). But, when I had my XXX the suspension was stiff as hell and would barely move when being lightly pushed......so if the HC is the same way, that could be why he thinks it's blown.

Ok thanks for the support guys, but should I go ahead and file the insurance claim? He says he is going to try and hook it up tomorrow to see if it works, if he says it doesnt, should I just file the insurance claim tomorrow?

Darn well I dont know what to do...one thing that didnt make me feel good was when he said "well actually I dont know what a blown sub feels like" so then I said"but you told me it felt blown, then you said you dont know what a blown sub feels like" he followed that up with, "well I do, I have blown many subs, to the point where they are frozen, even had smoke come from the voice coils" ...That made me not know what to think, so if he tells me tomorrow that he tried it and it doesnt work, should I just go ahead and make the insurance claim with fedex?

This guy sounds like an idiot, and I am not sure what Fedex is going to do for you. Was there any visible sign(s) of damage to the box? I can't see Fedex covering the cost of a sub because it doesn't work. You gotta show that it was damaged during shipping.

Why doesn't this guy just hook up the sub? Maybe he did as I suggested(and has blown the sub already) or he is having 2nd thoughts(or is low on cash) and needs to get out of the deal?????

Good luck!

Yea I am not sure, I am not trying to rag on the guy or anything, bc I dont even know him. Dont want to start anything just want to resolve the problem. He said that there was a dent in the box. I packaged it very well though, even put the one box inside another box. He said that both boxes had a dent in the same place. He also said that he "punched" down on the sub a couple of times and it felt frozen and that it got stuck where he pushed it down to.

if the sub worked fine for you, up till the time you shipped it, then the guy is full of shit. Shipping subs will not blow them...so unlikely. My sub had a problem after it was shipped to me, but that was with the gasket...only cosmetic and was easily fixed. Dont let this dude play you

Yea I did not think that the voice coil or sub could be acutally blown (frozen) from shipping which is how he is describing it. I know only cosmetic damage could occur. And there is a very very slim chance of ANY damage happening with the way it was packaged. I dont know what to do, but this sub cant be blown. I sent it out in 10/10 functional condition.

He also said that he "punched" down on the sub a couple of times and it felt frozen and that it got stuck where he pushed it down to.
If he is punching the sub, then IMO you are free from any liability. Punching a sub is not a recommended activity, and anyone with more than a few brain cells knows that it isn't the smart way to "test" a sub. If the sub is damaged, then there is no way to prove that it came like that since he is abusing it.

And if he has blown multiple subs, then he obviously doesn't know how to properly install and set up subs. So it is possibly that the blew it already, and is trying to make it sound like it came that way.

The guy that bought the sub from you is liable now. Shipping can only cause cosmetic damage to a sub. Tell the guy a sub cannot blow unless the UPS guy installed it, bumped it for the ride, repacked it, and gave it to him
