I currently have a klipsch 12" sub, but I want to do some DIY in my theater. I have a 12" brahma mkII just sitting around, and I think it would be a good HT sub.

What would be a good box size? I like it loud, ported and not gigantic would be preferred.

Also, whats a good and cheap plate amp (4 ohms), and how much power should I get? I don't have the space for a rack amp, so that's not an option.

I've got an atlas and dayton plate amp if interested.

If you're set on sticking with that brahma, you may want to look into the 500w bash amp.

i'm more set on spending as little money as possible. I was actually looking at eD plate amps. They look nice on paper, but I haven't heard anything real (not on ICIX) about their HT lineup.

The BASH amps from PE are pretty solid for the money. I've been using the 300W model every day for almost a year and it's held up fine so far and I do turn it up pretty loud every once in a while too. They had a big sale last summer with the 300W model selling at $109 and the 500W selling for $159 I believe. I made sure the snatch a few of each up; don't know if they will go on sale for that cheap anytime soon, but even at the regular price they are worth it.

Everyone says that you don't need as much power for HT. Is that due to the big boxes most people run? Since i'm trying to stay on the small side for the box, should I go with a 1k amp, or is 500 watts good?

to get flat response ported with a brahma, ur gonna need a HUGE box for HT, like 5-6cu.ft. tuned to 26hz

That's a smallish box, tuned too high.

not a chance that I am going to use a 5-6 cubic foot box. 3 cubes max, preferably 2.5 since the port will be pretty big.

I don't need it to be the perfect box. I just want to build something with the leftover oak I have. I am happy with the sound of my klipsh, I would like a tad more output though. Is that do-able with what i'm working with?

Driver size does not determine enclosure size. And yes, many people do want to tune to 20 hz.

To really maximize that sub you'll want a big low tuned box. Otherwise I'd probably go sealed.

I would, if I was doing ported. It's for HT, not for just music listening. Every major action title is being recorded with 20hz and less data, why not take advantage of that? Of course I think IB is the way to go if you own.
