Sub only plays when I push down on it...

My sub has been acting up...thought it was my wiring.

Connected it to another amp which was connected to another car...still same thing.

Figured something out, it will play when I press down on it.

It does sometimes make a "crackling sound" when I press on it, but sometimes it plays fine like normal.

It will also play for a few seconds after I let it sit over night.

The amp stays On and doesn't go to protected whether the sub is working or not.

Any suggestions?

dude, 99.99 percent chance that your voice coil is shorted out.when you push on it makes conection for a second,and when its cold heat expansion causes the same thing(vc's heat up quick when you turn on stereo). sorry but its new subwoofer time

or a tinsel lead has broken and only makes contact when you push down on it... had that same problem with my GZ Nuke 12 back in the day.

x2, had the same exact thing happen to me with my L7. Turns out the #2 voice coil tinsels were going bad. They finally tore in two, and I had to solder them ghetto like because solder doesn't stick to that wire for some reason. Time to either perform surgery, send it out, or buy new subs

Yep, I was gonna say tinsel lead. Push the cone in, they touch briefly, it works for a sec. If a voice coil shorts out/melts, its pretty much done for.

Do a search on here, someone posted a good thread on the proper way to fix a tinsel lead... cut it off and solder on a new one, at both ends.

Open, not shorted. If it was shorted, the amp would go into protect.
