I know that you can get away with thinner wire in a shorter run. My question is about whether or not 14 gauge should be able to hold 500 RMS @ 4-ohm load over a span of 5 feet or maybe a little less?

I'm pretty sure it can, but I prefer experience over assumptions.

So far a 50/50 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

I know 14 is good for roughly 750 watts (speaker wire) over I am assuming a 20 foot span (so says JohnEcon in the sticky up top)

I'll try it, if the wire melts...I have my answer //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

That would be a function of the harness, not the HU, I think. Have you looked into a Maestro or iData interface? i would check with crutchfield...
