I know that you can get away with thinner wire in a shorter run. My question is about whether or not 14 gauge should be able to hold 500 RMS @ 4-ohm load over a span of 5 feet or maybe a little less?

I'm pretty sure it can, but I prefer experience over assumptions.

14ga for 500rms is rather small wire for the wattage....

10 is good.....

I know 14 is good for roughly 750 watts (speaker wire) over I am assuming a 20 foot span (so says JohnEcon in the sticky up top)

You should be fine with 14 gauge...if you really are worried, you can run 12, but for 500 watts 10 gauge is overkill. That is unless your amp is sitting in the front seat of your car, and you have a 20 ft. run of speaker wire.
