Sub break-in question

When you have a very expensive high end sub thats built to handle gobs of power, more then likely break in is a good idea. Kind of like if you spend 5+grand on a nice motor, you don't go run it at redline rpm for an hr straight, you break it in.

In all reality, the sub the op is running will have no need to be broke in, but for future reference, that is not always the case...

It is my bad for bringing dd into this. I was just highlighing an example of a sub that you would want to break in. Now lets all be friends lol

DD told me to free air it on a 20hz tone for an hour at low volume and thats the best way to break it in
Thats a great start. It may be broke in at that point, may not take that long, may take longer, depends on the sub, but low volume, low frequency, free air is the best way for sure.

The only problem with that is who has an hour to just let there sub sit there and play at 20hz and shake the **** out of everything around it

I agree man. I am lucky I have a place out in the country with access to a nice size garage with electricity and plumbing. I can go sip on some beers and listen to the radio.

You do it free air.

I just use a 25hz test tone on my home system. I put it on repeat and let it do its thing for 30 mins of so.(Just with my DD subs.)

Most subs that have 1 or 2 spiders may not need much if any break in. Subs that have 5, 6 or more spiders my need some break in.

As for DD's, I have only had 1 of my 1508's that needed any break in and my current 3512 with the extra stiff option(8 spiders).

IMO, if a sub is SUPER stiff out of the box, give it a little play time before beating on it. If its not, then let it rip.

i have never done this way of breaking in a sub yet. It will work for any sub its just not something that only DD subs are able to do. Also a home system wouldnt even move bigger subs.

Sure, it will work with any sub/driver(I did not mean only DD subs-lol)

Iam willing to bet that the amps that I use for my home system will beat up just about any car sub.(Adcom GFA565's.)

And in free are, any good amp should be able to move a sub.
