Smaller sub for fast beats...

If they can handle it without distorting, your components should play bass ...
Well, to an extent. You really don't want them excurting very much, as they are far more susceptible to intermodulation distortion than their subwoofer counterparts, given that they play a much wider frequency range. You don't want your midbass muddied up because you are driving your mid at or near xmax.

I agree that a lower crossover point does tend to help preserve the up front bass illusion, but this must be carefully compared with the amount of IMD introduced from the increased excursion of the front speakers.

If you listen to your music at very low levels, then crossing them over low won't be a big issue, and you might as well do it. If you like listening at louder levels, I'd strongly caution against using too low of a crossover point.

Gobs of BL distortion on a midrange will lead to heavy duty higher order harmonic distortion and IMD, so choose wisely. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

hm......How would it sound if I used a 10" driver as opposed to an 8" driver to cover 60-120 hz?

it's a JL 10w6 recieving 350wrms. (my comps handle anything above 120 hz quite wel)
I'd say 120Hz is really getting up there. With a fairly steep slope you might be alright, but your are definitely pushing the limit there. You also do NOT want the sub being much louder than the front stage at all with a crossover point that high, as it could quite easily destroy your soundstage. If it sounds okay, go for it, otherwise back it down a little.

You might try 100Hz or so with a steeper slope. That will relieve the midranges a bit and leave the sub in a frequency range it's going to be more comfortable with.

That's why the new extremis and xxx mids, with tons of excursion and BL-optimization, really excite me (in a totally non-****** way!). Yes they have gobs of output and go really low (what everyone raves about them for), but Im mostly excited about the wider bandwidth this means they should be able to play. Finally a mid that I can use in a 2-way horn setup without sacrificing strong midbass or a solid mids. The older smaller mids I tried played up to 1khz well but lacked strong midbass. My IDQ 8's, although never hooked up, would have had strong midbass but wouldn't have liked playing up to 1khz. A mid with long excursion and BL-optimization theoretically should do both very well. One of these days I'll hook up my xxx's and find out. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yep, that is a big advantage. If you aren't losing much BL, then excursion doesn't really pose a problem from an IMD standpoint.
