You really don't want them excurting very much, as they are far more susceptible to intermodulation distortion than their subwoofer counterparts, given that they play a much wider frequency range. I agree that a lower crossover point does tend to help preserve the up front bass illusion, but this must be carefully compared with the amount of IMD introduced from the increased excursion of the front speakers.
If you listen to your music at very low levels, then crossing them over low won't be a big issue, and you might as well do it. If you like listening at louder levels, I'd strongly caution against using too low of a crossover point.
