Setting gains with dmm

QUOTE=McIntosh;6007235]why does your old ass come on here and argue with everyone? don't you have anything better to do then argue with us whipper snappers?
Nah, trying to invest in America's future. Maybe ONE adolescent will learn to appreciate what music is supposed to sound like and pass it on. An IPod at 150 dB is FAR from music whether it wins contests or not. Loud noise is noise nonetheless. Not all "whipper snappers" are lost causes.

for someone being older you sure haven;t learn that people are different. you just assumed you know what music supposed to sound like. everyones ears are different. what sounds good to you doesn;t sound good to everyone.

you seem more interested in sq. try diyma. they might suit your tastes better.

Thank you for your response. Your candor belies your age (in a good way). I shall address your points individually. Of course people are different, that goes without saying. I assume music is supposed to sound like the artist intended. Live performances may well have acoustic "problems" (most do) but the balance of bass, midrange and treble is there nonetheless. I've been to a good many concerts in my day and NONE had overpronounced bass that you hear miles away. I like to feel a kickdrum in my chest, don't get me wrong. It seems to be a "fad" nowadays to over emphasize the bass to extremes. That's NOT how the artist intended it. You are absolutely correct in your assumption that I'm interested in SQ, I have been for a LONG time. I'm finally able to afford both quality and quantity. I waited a long time to be able to do so. My car stereo was always a bit ahead of my home stereo (but not by much). Now they're both acceptable. They can both cause hearing damage (they have, I have tinnitus) if abused. Protect your hearing young man, it sucks to have tinnitus, trust me on that one too. I'm almost 50 and still love my music loud and clear, but the incessant ringing pretty much sucks. Take it or leave it.

i do agreed with you that everything should blend. not one overpowering the other. trust me in my system that everything blends pretty good. i'm sql. i loved loud music. i want to get my home audio up to par. went we have the sugar grove meet you should come and give a listen. you would probably loved mlstrass setup.

All of car audio is opinionated. SQ sounds good to some people. I don't know too much about it, but getting all the timing and what not right. Some people think bass at 150+ db sounds good, but could care less for SQ. There is no reason to bash another if they like a different style of music or different style of listening to music. Personally, I would like to go with great SQ, until I get to the bass. I like a lot of bass. That's just me. If you don't like loud bass, then don't have loud bass. But don't bash or criticize someone else for having it. The same goes for people who think SQ is stupid and it should just be about SPL numbers. It's all personal tastes. There are obviously certain do's and dont's in car audio. But no need to bash if someone likes a different style than you.

This is a possibility, Sugar Grove is not too far. Date/time??

I enjoy bass as well, I have a sub in my home system. As far as the timing (I think its BS especially in a car) I recently got a new Alpine 9886 with that capability (for a couple hundred more). I figure sound travels at about 700 MPH and I'm 6' from the back speakers and 2' from the front. Without doing the math, something tells me a human brain can't discern the delay. I'm not a bat trying to navigate after all. I also thank you for your level-headed response. Loud bass is one thing, virtually ALL bass is another. When I witness a car door open next to me at a mall/store/whatever and hear no mids or treble AT ALL it makes me cringe. What's next, nothing but super tweeters? To each their own I suppose, but that is NOT how the artist/band recorded it. People after SPL (or bass) alone clearly don't love music. Its basically penis envy: look how big my woofers are, perhaps you'll not notice my other "shortcomings".

About SPL. I love music. Now I use a different box for SPL than I do for daily. SPL is not about music, it's about hitting a tone as loud as you can. You see what I'm saying?, it's not supposed to be for music. It's like any other competition. Who's got the biggest baddest shit. Say like drag racing. Who ever has the fastest car wins. There are no turns or anything of that nature. It is just for speed. That's like SPL. It's just for loudness. In a competition it doesn't matter if your SPL burp sounds like shit, as long as it's loud.

But I do not ride around burping SPL notes, lol. I have a "flat" box that sounds pretty good IMO for being a AQ 18". I've had people say "I bet you can't even here the speakers in that". Then I let them listen to it. My speakers are just as loud as the bass. And they are clear as well. In my system you can here all the words outside of the car, not just the bass.

And don't even get me started on the guys who only have 20 Boss tweeters in their ride.

apparently your fathers shortcoming missed the bed sheets....lower frequencies take longer to develop so yes most times outside of someones car you might only hear the bass....but inside the car the driver and any passengers he/she may have hears the full spectrum of music.....now if you'll stop being so closed minded and do some research you would find that out.

People on this forum seem to think a short piece of wire can carry more current than a long piece. They're ignorant.
Mc, based on your obsession with this alone I have to question YOUR ignorance.

You've been technically trained in 120v AC - that's great.

I'm assuming your background in theory is minimal. It certainly appears to be as you keep trying to apply basic 120v ac theory to 12v dc.

If YOU were to run 10A through 100' of 12 ga wire at 120v and you drop a couple volts...who cares? As long as you have the cm/A you're covered. you probably don't even take voltage drop into consideration.

The primary concern in 12v power wiring is voltage drop - a lot of amps don't like it, and most will have reduced power output because of it.

Current draw in a car amp's power wire is not constant. An amp might be capable of drawing 100A dynamically, but continuous averages will be a small fraction of that. As long as the wire is fused properly we can most definitely get by drawing more current through a short piece of wire than a long one.

This is car electronics 101. We don't have codes to keep us from using our brains.

You NEED to get off your high horse, use your eyes a little more, and your fingers a little less.

FWIW - buck...even if your amp is fully clipped (which is highly unlikely since nothing would be recognizable as music) it would not produce 50v.

If you look at clipping on a scope you'll see the voltage does not increase much once clipping ensues, the shape of the wave widens - it's a current issue, not voltage.

My guess - a problem with the meter.

I used to set my gains by ear, I now use the DMM method as a way to check. My "by ear" settings and DMM measurements are always pretty close.
