sealed vs ported debate. who is right

but does not account for every little difference from car to car and system to system etc...
no fukin sh!t, i never said if you use the 12w6v2 in one of those boxes, you will get exactly THAT graph out of your car

I've never thought a sub's "upper end" is really that much of a concern...ideally, you should have your midbasses be playing confidently low enough where the driver's inductance isn't a concern (as well as avoiding the stage being pulled back due to localizable sound).

so with all this debate and the technical parts that you need to know to build a correct ported box, would i be better off just building a 4ft sealed box. since i doubt the shop im goin to has ne computer prog. showing them what dimensions and port sizes they need.

Agreed, but thats alot easier to accomplish in home than in a car, especially when people are running so much sub and very little front stage //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

I go against the SQ grain, I like my subs playing a little higher than they should in the car. My truck is far from a decent listening environment though.

anyone that knows about how to build a certain size box and how to tune with the ports etc wanna design me a box for like $10-20 and then i can just give the shop dimnsions and have them build it!

Doesnt group delay play a part in ported setups as far as SQ goes? Also don't large low ported setups sacrifice some upper end response to gain the low end response? I remember reading alot of old style Re xxx users complaining of that with their large low boxes. I had an fi Q 15 in a big box tuned low and I thought it sucked on the upper end.
How large do you consider large? People always said the XXX's needed a large box, and yet they required 4 cubes for a 15 ported, 2 cubes for a 12 ported, 1 cube for a 10 ported, etc. Last I checked, that's right on par with the average enclosure size in car audio these days. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Don't remember what people were running their xxx's in, I just remember the complaint. I know 4 cubes at 29hz on my FI q15 didn't please me. As stated above I'm one of those bad guys that likes more upper end response though //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

their are quite a few of us on here that can give you box plans.

if you are after SQ I think that you really need to hear a car with good SQ (near flat response across the board). most ppl hate the way a pure SQ setups sound b/c it doesn't have as much bass. I'd go ported if I were you especially since Kicker isn't that great of a woofer to go with for SQ, IMO. leave SQ to the Home Theatre guys.

whatever little SQ difference that the sealed box would give you would not be enough for you to enjoy your setup.

They were running them in 4 - 4.5 cubes per 15 ported. Again, right about average with other, similar subs.
Yes, I remember the complaints too. Doesn't make them right.

Whats right for some may not be right for all. Expecting more out of a sub/enclosure than what its capable of is not right though, thats just wishing

I would be happy to do a ported box if I can get good enough sq to listen to that size system on a daily basis. Do you think that's possible with the correct box?

Awesome thread.

Ported v's sealed, Jeep v's 4 door sedan.

Is there a benefit of running either type of enclosure in a car with a trunk v's a station wagon like a Jeep ?

yes.....you can run a properly ported enclosure and get decent sq with higher output than a sealed enclosure at higher sub-bass frequencies.

it has been shown that getting louder in a trunk car is more difficult than in an suv or open cab auto.

as for sq in trunk vs. open, I have no clue as I don't think there has been such a comparison.
