Pre out voltage and gain

When using 2v vs. 4v, would the 2v source require the gain to be turned up a lot higher to have an equal output as with a 4v source? Or would the differences in gain settings be small?

Depends on the range of settings that the amp has. If the amp accepts only .25-4V then the difference would be more than if the amp could use .25-15V (and there are amps out there that will do that). The difference in the first example would be about a 25% increase in the setting for the same power output.

Well since the gain would be pegged at the min for 4V in that example, 2x0=0 and you wouldn't have to change it.

BTW you would be effectively doubling the gain but that would be reflected in a 25% movement of the dial. Increase of 3dB in gain over a range of 12dB.
