Newbie Needing Help

clipping is when you ask an amp to put out more power than what it is capable of. if he has 4 volt preouts and sets the gain for 200mv then the amp is going to try to make more power than it can, which will lead to clipping.
i have a small issue with my P860 and its 6.5v preouts. it will actually cause some amps to clip with the gains off, even when backed by proper electrical.

if he matches the gain up with the preout voltage of his deck he wont have an issue.
That is not a bad problem to have. All you need to do is be a little more careful. When installing hook up the o-scope to the amp, and then begin to turn up the volume on the h/u. When your amp starts to clip you know what volume number you can safely use. I do it once with everything set to 0. Then, as I adjust the EQ, I make note of any change of when the amplifier clips.

Although I am probably just preaching to the choir, you probably already knew that.

I see... I may IM you later on that just to learn abit more... but Im going to get donuts now hahaha
my inbox is always open

But it is "dirty" power' date=' and speakers do not like it to put it in simple terms.[/quote']
its not so much that clipping is dirty, as it is that the sub will actually stay stationary (for an extremely short period of time) at the top and bottom of the stroke. while the cone is not moving the cooling of the woofer drops dramatically, which makes it much easier for heat to build up and eventually if let go unchecked will cause the magic smoke to rise from said woofer.

it was more with my old amps, the mmats and the kickers like the 6.5v preouts. its also really funny when i can tell people that i run my stuff with the gains off and its still louder than theirs (most of whats around my area any way.

I know the coils do get hotter because of the increased power of a clipped signal as well, and combined with the cooling problems caused by clipping can make one bad day for the inexperienced.
