measuring sub parameters

I have heard that to truly make the best box for your sub(s) you need to know the TRUE parameters not the manufactures parameters. I also heard there is a tool that lets you do this that you can get from parts express for $10. Any info on this topic would be appreciated. Even if I can somehow find out my woofers exact parameters I have no clue on how to use that to design the ideal box for it.

not $10, $100. link above is correct. the DATs is an awesome tool and useful for more than just measuring speakers, you can also measure resistors and inductors. you can see the effects of box rise and cabin rise after install. and if you sell speakers or subs, you can measure the T/S and share the results to prove the speaker works. that increases bid confidence and the unit will pay for itself. i know mine has.
