I have heard a lot of HP laptops are kind of cruddy. I had the dv5t when that was one of their better models and it was fine but then it got stolen. I have an ASUS netbook that is just having hardware failures on me. I will probably go to Costco and pick up the HP Envy model for school. So I'd say higher end HP's are decent.
Sony VAIO's are generally built well. I heard the new Samsung is okay too. A lot of people recommend ASUS, MSI, and some Lenovo 15.6'' model is pretty popular. Go check out notebookreview.com or other pc sites. Newegg reviews are a good place to look at, and a great place to buy from.
I generally have poor luck with laptops (get stolen, stop working properly, etc.) So good luck on your search.

yeah i keep hearing mixed reviews about this one. people either say it's great and works fine and others have problems right out of the box i'm guessing it's hit and miss. i've heard a lot of good reviews on ASUS and lenovos too a lot of people recommend them. the main thing i wanna get it for is entertainment though plus it looks sexy so that's a plus

jokes on you i already work at starbucks so if i get a mac i'll be like super hipster. i've had bad experiences with macs though and i'm also poor so i don't think that'll work out
