It might be easier to just rebuild. The tuning is gonna be WAAAAAY off if he stuffs enough 2x4's in there to change the volume from 4.2 to 2.375, like if he tuned it to abotu 33Hz initially it'll be near 45. To fix that the only solution would be to start sticking wood into the port to make it thinner, but I think those calcs would be a nightare. It's possible you're hearing the sub unloading at high volume from being in such an oversize enclosure.
You're not screwed. You need to find out what the port displacement is and subtract that from 4.2 to find the net volume. JL recommends 2.375cf @ 34.59hz. You can glue some 2x4 blocks inside or wall off a portion of the box to reduce the volume, try to get down to around 2.5cf. Double check the tuning, it'll change when you reduce the volume.
The other option is to start over and use the rec'd box dimensions on JL's website.
i will later.Get a video of it doing it.
sounds like typical JL Audio to me...When I get to bumpin it makes this really bad noise. It just doesn't sound like bass at all. It's more of a rattle noise. Nothing is in the box. It's a 13W7 in a 2.5 Cubic Foot box tuned to 32 hz. It's less than 2 weeks old..
