How to up voltage without hurting your electrical system

I know that some offroad trucks run a 24 volt system, but i dont know how they do it, or really why. i believe its for winches and hydraulics and such. i saw it on an episode of TRUCKS once, and they converted everything over to 24 volts.
dont know if that helps at all, but higher voltage systems are out there..

Tractors ( tractor trailers ) use a 24v starting system, but most items are 12v in the truck. It's done through switching. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
