How do they make a sub work in a smaller box?

What I mean is ...

What parameters or specs do they vary to cause my Alpine SWS-1043D 10" sub (300W RMS/ 900W max) to have an optimum recommended internal enclosure volume of 1.0 cubic foot, whereas a Rockford Fosgate P2D210 10" sub (250W RMS/ 500W max) has an optimum recommended internal enclosure volume of just 0.59 cubic feet?

maybe something to do with suspension stiffness? Maybe a looser suspension allows for more cone travel in a smaller sealed box, whereas a stiffer suspension will maintain control in a larger box.... Not sure, just makes sense to me

Actually a stiff spider reduces VAS and can lead to a smaller box... but also raises Qts so can cancel some of that effect.

Stronger motor AND a stiffer suspension tends to call for a smaller box.

Just generalizing here //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
