Should I just get the subs (he's wanting $240 for just the subs). Maybe I can get him down to $200. But then I'd have to get a custom box made for ~$150. Thoughts?

Talk to him and see if he will build you a box for those subs that fits your car. If you buy his subs and get him to build the box he might cut you a deal.

How do those Type-Es compare to Type-Rs? Just talked to the guy and I may be able to get two Type-Rs for $175 from HERE.

My thoughts are is you should consider what people are saying to you, and not ignore what everyone says.
Get a decent 15" sub, and build the box on your own, or buy one from a member here. Vitveet builds cheap enclosers, and they're pretty good as well.

to Swagger (OP), I'm about to PM you back in a few mins. But in the mean time, you're def. on the right track with where this is going! MOST of these guys are giving you EXCELLENT advise!!!! You can def. build this system in its entirity within your budget (that's if you're installing it all yourself.....if not you'll probably run a bit over your budget).

If I'm correct, I believe you'll need an amplifier bypass to install an aftermarket HU in that vehicle. If that's something you aren't too confident in, you should let a professional take care of the installation or else it'll end up costing you a lot more!

But if you need help with installing everything, I'm a little over 2 hours from you and you're welcomed to coming down to my shop at my house and I'll knock it all out for you in a few hours! You have it done RIGHT and at half the cost of most of the shops/stores out there!

Oh yeah, the Type E's with about 300-400 wts each ported would RUN YOU OUT of that car!!! VERY nice subs for the money! Not quite as loud as the type r's but the E's would be more than enough for you...trust me!!! I've owned/used/installed just about every sub out there the for the money, the E's are impressive! I've done several setups utilizing them!

I have also heard of here people running some Phoenix Gold subs and being quite happy with them, I think they are more SQ oriented though but you can find those cheap also

All right, so I've ordered most of my stuff already:

Now, I need to find some subs. I was thinking Type-R, SE, SDC2.5, etc. but it's hard as hell to find them. Everything on CL gets eaten up FAST; I decided to expand my options.

What about two JL 8" W7s? I watched some vids of them and they have amazing SQ. There's a pair on CL for $240 (supposedly in 100% perfect condition). I checked JL's website and these things retail for a @#$@#$ of money ($439.95 each).
