dumb laptop questions

basically right now you're used to this:

computer->modem->phone cord->jack in the wall

it'd still be essentially the same overall except:

computer->nic/ethernet card->ethernet/cat5 cable->jack in the wall

instead of a modem you have an ethernet card.

instead of phone chord (4 wires), it's cat5 (8 wires & thicker connector)

and with dsl/cable it's like a combination

computer->nic/ethernet card->cat5 & sometimes usb cable->cable/dsl modem->if dsl: phone cord to the wall; if cable: the coax cable feed

so the n/c/ethernet card is internal? i just plug in the cat5 cable into the laptop and then into the wall jack?

LOL Dude, where in Michigan are you? I'd be happy to help you out if you were somewhat local. I am by no means an expert but I hook up all of my friends networks and crap like that so I can get the job done...
He said hes moving to Florida, and its not really networking, just plugging in a cord lol.

Maybe he needs an instructional video:uhoh:

do you know where houghton lake is? 3 hours north of detroit. this is gonna be hooked up in florida though. it sounds easy enough though.

What are you going to use the laptop for, Work or personal? I would definatly sugest not getting the Intel Celeron processor (really slow) Either look for Centrino or Pentium 4 (Pentium 4 is the faster than centrino, but it lowers your battery life). Dell is a really good laptop, but usually the cheaper ones come with just the bare esentials to run windows xp, and other applications. Currently Im using a Sony Vaio, I absolutly love it, its way better than my girlfriends Dell Inspiron 6000, the vaio's are expensive but worth it

i found a used dell inspiron 4150 for sale. it was made in 2002 and has 30 days left on warranty. it has a pentium 4 processor, 1.4 Ghz., 384 mb of ram, 30 gig hard drive, cd burner (no dvd) and windows xp. they are asking $549 for it, but i think i can get it for $400. would it be worth it? i want to use it for surfing the web, downloading music (not tons of music) maybe e-mailing and editing photos, and school works. no games. also what about amd processors? the amd athalon in my desktop seems to work fine.

That laptop would be fine for the applications you are going to use it for. And AMD>Intel. AMD makes very nice processors, if you can find a cheap laptop with an AMD I would go for it.
