basically right now you're used to this:
computer->modem->phone cord->jack in the wall
it'd still be essentially the same overall except:
computer->nic/ethernet card->ethernet/cat5 cable->jack in the wall
instead of a modem you have an ethernet card.
instead of phone chord (4 wires), it's cat5 (8 wires & thicker connector)
and with dsl/cable it's like a combination
computer->nic/ethernet card->cat5 & sometimes usb cable->cable/dsl modem->if dsl: phone cord to the wall; if cable: the coax cable feed
