First off, what size alt do you currently have? It must be tiny if you consider a 140a 'high output'.

Second, you nearly ALWAYS add a second batt (or upgrade your main) before upgrading your alt.

When playing music, yours amps power demands change very quickly, an alt cannot change its power output quickly, so you end up depending on the capacity of your battery for quick power. So, first you upgrade your battery capacity, then you upgrade the alt.

well actually anything over 135 amps is considered high output in alot of alts, mine is probly bigger than any of the other 88 model cars, its a 105 i believe, i figured i'd need almost a 200, but i didnt know maybe if i would get the yellow top and a 140 i would be good or not?

so i think keep the red top and get a 200amp alt? and maybe get a yellow to add on to the red in a few weeks?

How does the battery get recharged? If you have two huge batteries and his alternator can't even recharge one fast enough then whats the sense in getting another battery first to put more strain on the alternator. I made this same mistake early on and have learned that you definiately get an alternator first.

That sounds like a good plan //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

with box imp rise wired too .5ohm you wouldnt even see .5 at the amp would you?
For sub wiring you would consider it a "nominal impedance" which means that it would NEVER go below that which in turn protects your amp. If you wire at .5 ohms on a 1 ohm stable amp then your risk of damaging the amp is much greater....

Music is dynamic, which means you only draw high power to your amp when the bass hits, in between the batt is recharging.

That AQ is probably only pulling ~1000 W so there really isn't much point of upgrading the alt at this time.

There are many people here running much more power than that with stock alts and no voltage problems....

Well, sicne I seem to be very close to you, heres my input.

Im runing a Visonik 4000XD @ 2ohm, dmm'ed to see about 2500rms + a kicker 750.4. dmm'd for about 600rms. So Im seeing 3000+ anyways when its full tilt.

Ive got a 110 amp alt (with 140k miles), a blue top and a big off the shelf $100 battery from autozone. At full tilt I dip to about 11.8 at the lowest.

With just the blue top I dipped into the 10's. Second battery gave me over a full volt, and it only cost me $100. and youre car runs / systems performs just fine @ 12v

Ive also got the big 3 in 2/0 weld wire

Personally Id go get a nice backup battery or 2. You can also play in lots / camping for A LONG time with a couple batts

what about a batcap 2000 and a 200 amp alt?
or would a yellowtop and a 200 amp alt be better?

idk what kind of cca a yellowtop puts out.?
Battery brands are a matter of personal opinion, just check out the 100's of posts in this section.

But make sure whatever brand you go with, you get at least a group 31 batt which is one of the largest ones.

Personally I would get a Deka (best price), Odyssey (best warranty), or Optima. All those brands are companies owned in USA, most other brands will be from China. You can check out their websites for specs.

Are those for group 31 batts? 160 for a yellow top group 31 is a good price. Otherwise I think the group 31 Deka is around that same price.

I've haven't heard too many good things about batcaps....
