Am I expecting too much

None of you know what the hell you are talking about, that amp has internal pass-thru so if you DON'T have a dedicated subwoofer input signal then the sub-channel is fed from the remaining inputs but if you switch it to 5-channel mode without a actual input into the sub input you will get NO SOUND because you don't have a input signal going in.....this is why I said take it back to the shop FIRST before you start messing with it because you have to always take what's said on the internet with caution!!!!

So your telling me it's wired correctly maybe? But if it's not using channel 5 which is the channel dedicated for the the sub it wouldn't be getting the full power from that channel right?

I can't see the actual wiring but what I'm assuming is that your car didn't have or they didn't use your factory sub output for the sub input on the amp, meaning that they simply used the other four channel inputs ie front L&R and rear L&R speakers as high level inputs in which case the setting on the amp should be right where it's at on 4 channel input. The amplifier in turn uses these inputs to feed channel 5 which is perfectly normal cause most 5 channels amps do the same thing.

So if that's the case your telling me in this case everything's all good and the amp is still feeding my sub from channel 5 and getting full output

I really don't think that enclosure is for that sub. Prefab enclosures are tuned pretty high. I think you did get ripped off. I also think you should go back and tell them to fix it make it better or ask for your $ back.
Box looks like DD spec box to me. Honestly I'd expect it to be loud if I saw it in person.

*edit*

Not sure why I thought the sub channel had less power.

Still though, have reasonable expectations out of a trunk and a single 12.

Curious as to what you are running now????
Sorry it took so long for me to see this but I'm currently running an American Bass TNT 15'' in a nice big homemade box I made tuned to low 30hz running off a Rockford Fosgate R1200-1D. My head unit, although not the best, (DUAL XD6150) get's the job done and delivers a clean signal
