Xmax on subs more=better? or less=better?

i was looking at the pioneer TS-W5102SPL spl specs and it says the Xmax is only 11mm or like 3 1/4 of an inch , my btl's are 28mm. more than twice the pioneer sub is..........

its a spl sub , but pioneer says it will play music with no problems.....the fs is 30, and my btl's are 31 .....

my question is . does the Xmax of a sub matter?

Long story short, not really.

on a sealed enclosure yes it is important, ported no. 11mm is only .4331". the xmax isnt the amount of excursion a woofer has, google it...

its the measurement of one-way linear cone travel.

Linear coil travel. Linear travel doesn't mean that is moves in a straight up and down motion, it describes the motor force on the coil and once that force starts decreasing, the driver starts to work in a non-linear region.

Xmax is important but should not be the only spec looked at while deciding what driver is right for you.

One thing you can definitely say about Xmax is that you need as much as you can get if you're using a sealed box and want the most output possible at 20 Hz or so. The lower you go, the more excursion is required to reproduce it.

...but other than that the discussion will get really interesting really quick. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Care to explain this further?
Maximum peak linear excursion of driver, in meters. "Short for Maximum Linear Excursion. Speaker output becomes non-linear when the voice coil begins to leave the magnetic gap. Although suspensions can create non-linearity in output, the point at which the number of turns in the gap (see BL) begins to decrease is when distortion starts to increase.

Xmax is something you need to take into account when designing a ported box. Anyone who tells you that xmax doesn't matter in a ported box is wrong.
yes...
