Xmax on subs more=better? or less=better?

Linear coil travel. Linear travel doesn't mean that is moves in a straight up and down motion, it describes the motor force on the coil and once that force starts decreasing, the driver starts to work in a non-linear region.
Xmax is important but should not be the only spec looked at while deciding what driver is right for you.
Linear coil travel is Xmag, not Xmax.

A driver can be either suspension limited or motor limited.

To call Xmax one or the other is wrong. It is the lesser of the two, whichever happens first.

yea but the 15 has way more cone area than an 8 so cant really use that as an example, get two subs same cone area same power but different xmax and see what one is louder to solve your problem.

on that note, i just got metered with that 1508. (8") and did a 138.4 on the dash of my truck with the windows up at 50hz. this was in a 1cuft tuned to 35 or so. next weekend i will be building a "fart box", about .6cuft tuned to 40-45hz.

that 1508 only has 9-10mm one way at the most where the w7 i think has 19mm one way. now dont get me wrong, the w7 sounded really good but iam done with sounding good in my truck for now. iam gonna try my best to get into the 140's even if i have to catch that 1508 on fire to do so.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eek.gif.771b7a90cf45cabdc554ff1121c21c4a.gif

the problem with 10s is there is so much range in size, outer diameter 10-11". another thing is the surronds very so much 1.5-3". got to remember half of ur surronds is used as cone area too.

when ur cabin pressure is increasing it is harder to move the cone without BL (motor force). this is where spl subs come into play with the larger motors.

kinda like when you open ur window and it gets (sounds louder) because ur releasing the pressure from the cabin so ur woofer can throw more.

in the larger high powered spl rides they cant even burp with a door cracked open at high vol or they could shread there woofers from over excursion because its set to handle the power sealed up. opening the door would release pressure and over excursion on the woofers.
