Xmax on subs more=better? or less=better?

u guys make me lol.
how do you guys test ur tunning when building a car? you can build the box to the T for a certain frequency but it can and more than likly will change when placed in the car. to test ur enclosure tunning frequency it will be the tone with the LEAST amout of cone movement. if you drop below this ur sub will be acting if it was playing freeair and have huge excursion. now when you burp at ur peak frequency(cabin) you CAN hit xmax but it happens when way overpowering a subwoofer.

scoobydoo; actually it take the cone area of 3 10s to get close to the cone area of a single 15".

I think folks are jumping on you because you are using SPL burping as a reference. In this case you are of course, correct. However, by not stating this reference in your first post you open things up to miss-interpretation.

Scooby was teasing of course, so don't take his statement to mean too much.

Xmax can and many times does get reached when music is used as a source.

Some of the loudest subs don't have much XMAX //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
So that would mean that they are in the loudest installs?

Mo excursion=not better? What am I missing? Say it isn't so.......
Not necessarily.

A sub with the Xmax of 20mm+ won't be loud / sound amazing and what nots. I mean, if you take other factors into effect, then yes. But just looking at Xmax alone, it means nothing in terms of loudness and "mo betta"ness.

ya i was being sarcastic, however xmax is semi important for me since i am into SQ over SPL and use very small sealed boxes

i have two subs right now, a 15" in a 1.6cuft sealed and a 10" in a .6cuft sealed, both with 23mm xmax

scoobydoo; actually it take the cone area of 3 10s to get close to the cone area of a single 15".
One 15"(176sqin) sub is closer to two 10"(157sqin) subs in cone area than three 10" subs(235sqin)

...but then again with more excursion comes bigger surrounds which can decrease actual cone area...blah, blah, blah;)

he knows what hes talking about . we had a lengthy conversation about it.

yea but the 15 has way more cone area than an 8 so cant really use that as an example, get two subs same cone area same power but different xmax and see what one is louder to solve your problem.
