Will a sub sound like crap when not in box?

I was testing my Infinity Kappa 10" out in the open before mounting it in the box and it sounded like crap almost like it was blown. It seemed kind of quiet too. My gains are adjusted on my amp. Will it sound right once its mounted in the box? I'm using the non-fading/sub output on my Premier 840 HU if that makes a difference. Thanks.

its suppose to be in a box!//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif i don't think any sub can be left out in the open, especially if you want it to work:D

well chances are that you blew it while doing that to the sub, without a box it will have nothing to restrain it from moving to the mechanical capabilities of the driver and most likely blow it.

hopefully u didnt blow it,

DAN

no, you didnt likely blow it...

no worries there...

it will sound better once its in a box

don't mind bass boy there... he's drunk.. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You should only ever run subs free-air if they're made to be run free-air. Almost all subwoofers are intended to be in an enclosure. I doubt it damaged it if it was run for a short time, but over an extended time, it would cause damage to the driver.

im watching you...

lol

your name on MSN was "SO WASTED" or something to that effect, lol.

basically, running a sub freeair does a couple things, but the biggest is decreasing hte mechanical power handling of the sub... what happens is, there is no suspension of air to keep it from going beyond its limits.

you can run it forever and day out of box, just do it right //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

When running a sub free air once you don't go over it's x max (which will be a lot lower than it's RMS free air) you should be ok right ?

yup...should be ok. it also depend..if the cone is barely moving and you're giving it lots of power..watch out for thermal overloading. don't block the vented pole piece too!
