which way should my ports face??

I own a 99' cavalier and plan to build a ported box for 2 12's out of 3/4"mdf/2 ports.my ?My subs will be facing the back of the trunk.my question is to get the most bass response,which way should i drill the ports?on the front or on top of the box??
