I think I remember reading somewhere that they need b/w .75 and 2 cubic feet of air space (each) for a ported enclosure. Now, as for design it depends on the vehicle, where its going to be located, etc...

well that box is 3.5 ft^3 and it is tuned to a frequency of 32hz
