nah, you're quite right, its a work in progress.
most of the gear is sitting here.

eight 18inch subs, four sets of 6.5inch splits for the fronts, two 4 X 100watt amps for the fronts, I have one possible sub amp, trying to source another the same.

still deciding on batteries.

Wait, I didnt read the whole thread. The guy that says upgrading wiring to accommodate the increased current flow from the after market stereo is not necessary/a last step... has a degree in electrical engineering?
The guy that just over simplified the entire capacitor argument down to 'it worked in my minivan therefore its a miracle cure for lack of alt/wiring for everyone' has a degree in electrical engineering?

The capacitor works in one specific circuit, and even though, you can throw all the numbers, science, and physics at them that exists on God's green earth (Or Allah's), and they'll just simply reply, "WELL, IT WORKED IN MY CAR!"

Not realizing that there are things called cover-ups. Things that work, but doesn't really "fix" it.

I would rather look at blatant facts of how a capacitor may appear to help your system, but in reality it is not helping. Many people have proven and explained to you why a cap doesn't work, yet you have no counter argument other than, "you don't know about the uber cap that i have and if you did you would see how much it helped just like i did... Im still baffled how anyone who has been formally trained in electrical engineering would say upgrading wiring to acceptable levels is a last resort.

I've learned a lot from this thread. I too have a Nissan with a noisy electrical system. That being said, I'll do more research on this "cap as filter" theory to see if it would be beneficial to me. I have built many rectifiers to convert AC current to DC current and know about the smoothing that caps can provide, but since the car's electrical system is DC current anyway, wouldn't this still be negligible?

The cap won't even finish one discharge cycle because you have a battery sitting there with (relatively) infinite current at 12.5v. The cap will never have voltage lower than the battery.

That is one of the big problems with the application of stiffening caps in a 14v charging system. About 3/4 of the energy stored is below the lowest voltage of the system.

That's if the alternator can supply enough current to the battery to keep it at 13.8V.... this doesn't always happen if large loads are placed on the electrical system as a whole.

I have no misconceptions regarding a car's charging system.

My comment had nothing to do with the alts ability to maintain 13.8 all the time. I am assuming the alt has reached its limit. Unless you have a multi-Kw system or a 60A alt the excess current needed from the battery is very small. 10-20A for a fraction of a second every few seconds and 14v from the alt in between is barely enough to tickle a 600-900A CCA battery.

My point was just that of what little energy is actually stored in a cap only about 30% of it is available between 14 and 12v.

In the right situation a cap can reduce headlight dimming, but that doesn't help the amp. If a reduction in headlight dimming is the goal the cap should be installed in the engine compartment somewhere near the headlights.

WB, Claiming to actually HEAR an improvement by installing a cap is 100% psychoacoustics. There is no other explanation for that.
