underpowered sub still smelly?

Haha, turn it down til it doesn't sound distorted anymore.

If you don't know what distortion sounds like play a test tone, or a song and turn your gain down a considerable amount and listen, then turn it up again.

A lot of people set their gains via a DMM, I set mine by ear.

It's obvious that you are incapable of that, so try the DMM, there is a tutorial for it.

IIRC you can get a cheapo Oscope that works just fine for audio's precision needs. Check the car audio GD section
