Type R...dissapointed

Well I finally put my type r in today. It's in a 02 accord sedan (trunk) in a 2.2ft^3 box at 32 hz.

Frankly, I think I must have been expecting to much. I was under the impression it would be louder than my friend's fi Q off of 600 watts for some reason, but rather it's much quieter. Mine is also off 600 watts @4 ohms.

All the talk back in the day about how good the spl is on the type r, maybe overrated? Or maybe I just have it set up wrong (I sure hope so). It's not that much queiter, but I'd say it moves quite a bit less air. I do get some pretty good trunk rattle/flex. I would've liked to give it more power and a bigger box, yes, but even at 600watts I think I was expecting more.

The install on the q is almost the same, done by me, in a 2.5 cube box at 32. It's in a camry, so the vehicle is similar.

I DID not set the gains correctly, though. I couldnt' figure it out. I know that cadence amps aren't testable by DMM unless you have a dummy load (forgot the reasoning for this...) so I tried to do it by ear. Had a 50hz test tone at both 0 and -3db, and I couldnt' get the sub to clip even at max gain setting

. Have no idea what I did to get this. Bass EQ on the amp is maxxed out, as is the bass on the HU. Or maybe, I don't know what clipping sounds like? I was under the assumption it would be like the gains on the speakers where it changes tone.

Anyways, just thought I'd share my rant. If anybody can help me with my gain problem, it would be appreciated as well. I just guesstimated and set it about 3/4 of the way since my hu has a pretty low rca voltage (2.2v).

The sub was only overrated when people were acting like it was the best thing ever made. However, for the cost there isn't too many subs that can hang with it. I'm very happy with my 15; it did a 149.7 (headrest) at the last show that I attended. I'm guessing that you have a 12?

I was thinking that. But should it not be louder than a Q off the same watts? I mean, the Q can take much more too...

I'm thinking of taking out my rear speakers for more airflow. My deck lid thing rattles like CRAZY too. I"m not quite sure how i'm goin to get rid of it yet.

Your sub probably isn't even receiving it's suggested power (500w) after impedance rise and whatever else is going on with the setup. Also, with a box that size you will lose output but gain a flatter response. Everyone that is getting loud with R's are doing small boxes + a lot of power.

what may not be loud to you may be loud to others. its very hard to tell from other people saying "o my god this thing is deafening" But you might not think its that loud.

The sub's hooked up correctly. It's a dual 2 voice coil, wired to 4 ohms on two channels from an amp, bridged.

Whatever, I mean it's decent output, just not what I was hoping for. Maybe i'll add another one in the future, or go for an hdc3.

I am concerned, however, taht I am clipping and do not know it. I still dont know how to tell...

did you give it a chance to break in? I had two 12's and they took about a good hour of bumpin before they really started getting loud. SQ was better before they broke in though

I stuck a single Alpine Type R 12" in as a temp set up in a 1.90cf3 enclosure

tuned at 29hz and have it hooked up to my BPX 2200.1

the sub actually doesn't sound to bad...it actually takes the 2400+w rms

with regular music beets (NOT BASS CD"S)

it doesn't blow me away or anything but SHE BANGS:D
