Hey guys, well heres the prob...sitting at a redlight listening to a CD at around 20 on an alpine head, all the base goes out. I'm startled so i turn the volume down and then back up. as i get back to around 20, the base is noticably softer. So I get home, pop the trunk just to look and poke around and I noticed both subs are functioning, neither sounds blown, but one sub just over powers the crap out of the other. I have the amp running in 2ch mode so each gets ~600 watts and I unplugged the 'better' sub and it didnt seem to phase the other, just same low output. Any ideas/suggestions?

smell anything funny?

does the 'broken one' sound scratchy or have any mechanical noise? hows your gain looking? any bassboost\EQ?

sounds like the coil might be 1\2 gone on the one that has less output, thus might explain why it still works.

Test each one, Push on the speaker cone (VERY SOFTLY!) If you hear or feal a scratching sound it's voice coil is blown.

Do a run down on it man. Only you in person can really see if it is blown or not.

"but one sub just over powers the crap out of the other"

I,ve seen this happen before when a speaker wire connection came loose at the sub, hopefully thats all it is.
