The purpose of a 10" sub

I thought that part has already been addressed in this thread. The other parts are correct.
If you have two subs of the same model, using the same motor, the larger one has the potential to get louder. It will take a bigger box but more radiating surface area driven by even the same power and motor means more air being moved which = louder.

Key word there.

Anyone that clings to the belief that Mms determines driver "speed" needs to take a visit to Adire's site and read Wiggins' tech paper on it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I think most of those comments were jokes. I tried to read it, but I didn't have the correct background to understand the science of it.

8's are fast, 18's are slow..

What the hell are you talking about. 40 Hz is 40 Hz whether it is an 8 or an 18 or a **** 36 inch sub. My 15s hit just as tight and responsive as a 12, 10, 8, or 6.5. And there are 6.5" subs that will play just as low into inaudible tones as any 18. The 18 just does it with more authority becasue of much more displacement. I think people get confused when they hear the difference in 10s and much larger subs. Since the smaller ones don't move as much air as the larger they get a reputation for being punchier and large subs get labeled sloppy. This is not the case, fact is they all work the same and the difference in air displacement is what causes it to sound/feel different.

Okay, so not everyone is realizing 90% of the information in this thread is incorrect... HardRockFan is a moron, so people played along... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I had to say potential only because box size is a factor. All nitpicking aside the larger driver is LOUDER.

The only reason PhatTony got angry earlier is because someone said a larger sub is louder and made no qualifications. Tony was right - there are 12's that will murder 15's in output.

My comparison is more to the point. All things equal (and by equal I mean in their proper sized enclosure not the same box) the larger sub will create a higher SPL.

okay...I suppose I was a little nitpicky there
