The only thing "class A" about those amps is the name.
Word. I'd like to say 2 things before this thread dies

1.Class D does not stand for digital. They call it d becuase a b and c were already used. Class D amps are used in 100k home installs, sorry if it's too good for your car, lol.

2.No such thing as a true class A amp in a car. You'd kill even an alt in minutes, regardless of listening level.

Blazemore is correct.

The HSS amp is a true pure class A amplifier.

But I don't think there are any solid state class A amps.

Most are just high bias class A/B's.

But that Soundstream doesn't even fall within that classification.

true, I should have qualified that better. All solid states switch at some point though.

 
You're right that they're not "true" class A, that would be about 120A constant draw, which is why I call it the "car version" of class A.

I think they made the input section non-switching, but it's really beyond my understanding of amp design. They do have a distinctly warm sound which is probably re-creatable, but again beyond my ability.

Nonetheless, just the heat output from those suckers is immense, a good indication of inefficiency.

You misunderstood the analogy. 100k home installs have nothing to do with anything here.
