System going out the window

20yrs ago that may have been true.
With the quality design and build of many full range class D amps within recent years.....you won't hear an audible difference between them and a quality A/B.
Thank you, it's such a misconception nowadays that Class D amps are limited to Sub amps only. With their small size, we can only hope we'll see more and more of them turning full-range.

Post some prices on the SS, I may bite.
I'm going to spend a few weeks with the new setup before making a decision on that. If these amps aren't a step down I'll probably sell the SS's & keep you posted.

I agree that full-range class D is the wave of the future. Won't be long before we laugh at big amp designs the same way we do with the Commodore 64. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/naughty.gif.94359f346c0f1259df8038d60b41863e.gif:naughty:

You must not be looking very hard //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif The old Soundstream Rubi's are all over the place.

I used to have a pair of 302's and a 702.

He went on to flame me in nis next post. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif:laugh:

That 702 was an impressive little critter. I still have an old A 100II collecting dust in the basement, can't bring myself to sell it. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blush.gif.99bc659ee2012b7d826165e26fb5eebe.gif

UPDATE - Tried the full-range D-class amp on the mains & expected to spend a coule weeks with it evaluating. Usually takes me a while to really get a feel for new equipment.

Not this time. Right off the bat the SQ suffered. I lasted a couple hours before I had to switch back.

Bottom line - the full range D class amps sound better on paper than in person, if you know what I mean.

So it's back to this (no real complaints):

Y'all really want to give me some grief? Let me tell you the master plan, then you can lite into me accordingly. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Objective: Better gas mileage.

Those three amps, all class A (car version, anyway), are tremendously inefficient, meaning they draw a lot of current a lot of the time. That means a lot of resistance at the alt, right? Consequently, reduced HP & MPG. No idea how much, that's just the theory.

Plus they get hot enough to cook on & require forced air in the summer, which sounds obnoxious.

The new generation of D class amps are hyper-efficient & sub-artic in operation. I was hoping to capitalize on those qualities & recreate the warmth of the old SS's thru creative EQ'ing and crossover use.

Didn't work. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

The class-A warmth issue aside, the D class main amp sounded, uh, digital.

For those that remember when CD's first came out, remember how much more "real" a good turntable setup sounded vs a CD player? It was like that. The new amp just didn't sound musical like the SS's.

Don't get me wrong, there was tons of clean power. Just not the same. Plus it was soft in the midbass in a strange way that I couldn't really EQ out.

Given that I was ultimately sacrificing SQ for MPG, you may commence with the flaming. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif:D

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif and leave that one alone. But I have to say that's the first thou.

Just a high class A/B, very little next to none you would notice hp/mpg loss. I'd worry about weight (box etc) if your looking at mpg.

Plus they get hot enough to cook on & require forced air in the summer, which sounds obnoxious.
Going to ask how you kept them running cool closed up. One draw back that most don't know or can't understand and nuke a great amp.

What I've been hearing.

The new amp just didn't sound musical like the SS's.
Reason I still use mine, and love it.

I didn't really expect to see any real MPG gains past the decimal point, just my rational for creating a more efficient design w/o sacrificing SQ.

The forced air setup is a squirrel-cage fan on either side doing a push/pull. Cut 1.5" vent holes & black-meshed them in each corner, then att'd fans in the stock "channels" off the sides of the spare area.
